ok don't laugh but me and a buddy where up riding our 4 wheelers the other day and i put some ramps that i made on the tailgate and one slipped off while loading causeing causing the 4 wheeler to fall down and hit the edge of the tail gate causing a huge dent on the top of the tail gate. my question is this what years of our first gens had the same tailgate. all the trim and hardware are in good shape so i could swap that.

I think that the break in model years is at 1981 ie 1981-1993 are the same, check with a salvage yard they all have access to interchange data that shows the correct matches.

Guys, I need help in this area also. How come some of these trucks say DODGE and the one on my truck and some others say Dodge Ram, just wondering about this because I never knew the difference.

Hi J DeMaio.

The "standard" trim tailgate says "DODGE RAM"
and was used from '81 to '93. This tailgate has the letters stamped directly into the metal. Optional trim (SE/LE) tailgates got the brushed metal inserts that say "DODGE RAM" ('89, maybe earlier and '90) or the large "DODGE" metal badge with red reflector ('91-'93).

The tailgates on optional packages will physically interchange with the standard units but a standard tailgate will not accept the optional trim metal and a optional tailgate does not have the stamped letters and looks bad without the metal trim.
