Brought my NEW truck to my friends shop to have him change the oil after 2455 miles.
Supplied a new Fleetguard stratapore filter (from Geno's) w/ Cummins/Valvaline premium blue oil. Got it back and stated he couldn't believe how hard it was to get that factory filter off. I laughed, after hearing about you guys stating how hard it was I told him I wasn't surprised LOL. (Thanx)

Need your help again though, he told me I need to bring it into the dealer. Said the Tailshaft Housing Seal was leaking.
Any history of problems with this? I Did a search and couldn't come up w/ anything conclusive.

have them check the slip yoke , do you have a nice spray pattern from frame rail to frame rail ? i had this on my 98 1/2 ton 4x4 , it was a crack in the weld of the plug that covers the splines in behind the u joint . very hard to find , they will think its the seal .

Mine leaked but only when towing. Had it replaced and no trouble since. I have seen this problem mentioned several times on the forum. DC must have gotten a load of bad seals or is a bad design.

Kevin,

I have 25,000 miles on mine and I'm on my 3rd seal. So far this latest one is holding up. The first one started leaking about the same mileage yours is. If this latest one starts leaking I'm replacing it myself, it is easy to do, but the part costs $25.

BTW, nice to have another "Mac" on the board #ad

Hi Guys: I have about 70K on my 98. 5 3500 4x4 and I see it's starting to leak as well. Those of you who had the seal replaced, was it a warrantee item or did you pay full dealer price. I have the extended warrantee on mine. If it'e not covered, what does this job cost?

I just cant believe that this has happened w/ under 2500 miles on the odometer. #ad

I'm going to take a closer look around to see what kind of leak it is.
I just don't want to give up my new Cummins! #ad

I developed a leak at about 14k. I took it to the dealer and they changed all seals in trans and transfer case. 28k so far w/ no problems.

I have 45K on my truck and I'm on the 3rd seal. It seems to be holding. If you have the extended warranty, any seal on the drivetrain should be covered. Check your warranty. I have been told that leaking, especially in gear boxes on heavy duty trucks (which ours is) is not unusual, but only after time and mileage have accumulated. And then I would think it should only be seepage due to those lovely #ad
Dodge gaskets getting old. Based upon experience and trustworthy advice, I have been told that synthetic lubes tend to find gaps in seals that conventional lubes will not. A leak at 2500 miles, however is unacceptable. By the way, my first TS housing seal went at about 7300 miles. Hope you get it fixed.

rear trans seal leak two weeks ago. #ad
warranty fixed, no leak so far. #ad
today, pinion seal leak. #ad
what seal will be next? (20,600 miles since 2/00)

Mine also went bad with under 20K. Hate to bring it up, but if the other end of the drive shaft is attatched to a Dana 80, its front seal will probably start to leak before long also!
(been there, done that)

My output shaft seal has seeped since I first noticed it at about 5k miles. Never dripped but alwqs a drop hanging, was not slinging it. It is seeping between the machined housing and the seal steel ring. . I dont think they use any silicon in the seal bore to seal the steel to aluminum.
Has 25k mi now.

Yep, mine always has a drop ready to go, plus oil is evident in the area. RedRig began leaking at 37000, lucky for me just past the 36K mark!
I check the level regularly and it has never leaked enough to add, plus I've never seen a drop on me gravel. By the sound of the replies, I think I'll hold off until this gets worse.
