I now heard on the news that they will be recalling the replacements. Apparently, those are defective too. Glad I didn't jump right on this one. I'm going to let this shake out a bit. www.baynews9.com

It's better to have the NEW recalled part that hasn't degraded vs. the old part that has had years to degrade with heat and humidity.

I just got back from the dealer this afternoon after checking on the Takata recall. There is no real delay on the passenger side airbag for my '03, but the Service Manager told me that it is likely my driver side airbag will also be recalled, and that there will likely be a recall number for the combination of the passenger and driver side airbags, and that I should wait until that combo number is issued. I actually liked hearing that because I have two issues I want to address that the combo recall might mitigate in terms of cost to some degree. The first is replacing the dash lights for the instrument cluster. I really don't want to take my dash apart, and if all or most of the labor involved is for the airbag recall I would go ahead and have the dealer do the lights at the same time. The second is at least one mode door on my HVAC system, specifically Mode Door A (I think that's the one) that switches air flow from the front vents on the dash to either the defroster or floor vents. I also have a problem with the blend door. Both work, but the Mode Door takes some coaxing and the blend door doesn't work very well for incremental changes in the mid-zone. It works fine at the extreme hot/cold settings, but I have to play with it to get the mid temperatures to moderate. If they can do this at a significantly lower cost in tandem with the airbag recall I'd probably let them do it because I really don't want to spend the time fixing it, even with the Heater Treater replacements. Also, after talking to the Service Manager I was glad I spent the $30 on a dash mat when I first bought the truck. He said that if your dash is cracked it will probably crack a lot more when they do the recall work, and you may end up needing a new dash. My dash mat, along with the sun screen I've used has protected my dash and after 12 years there are no cracks anywhere on it.

According to the owners page at http://www.dodge.com my '04.5 is included in the recall.... I notice I STILL have listed that stupid recall for the back-up indicator for the 48RE transmission.! NEVER!

Make SURE whenever you take it to the dealer for ANY service that you tape over the OBDII plug "DO NOT FLASH" and tell the service writer to put it on the work order. Otherwise guess what? Good chance you'll get it. No way to undo it either.

The other day, the news said there was another death attributed to this recall.
It's like driving with a loaded and cocked 12 gauge shotgun pointing in your face.
I asked the dealer if they can remove the bag until the parts come in and they said federal law says they can.
Go figure, they make you have it for your safety, have a defect where it might kill you, and make you keep it in place until the replacement comes in.
And this is for your safety ?

I suggest writing your local representatives and senators and making them aware of your concerns.

1) That the old FORD problem of not finding "park" is NOT an acceptable solution with the 48RE back-up indicator horn blaring.
2) They should outlaw Ammonium Nitrate use in airbags effective immediately until they can figure out the obvious expensive issue.
3) Allow airbags to be disabled until parts are available.
4) Drop CAFE and dependance on coffin on wheels small cars with useless plastic bumpers that require airbags to live through a crash. Yeah bring back the 5 MPH bumper standard! (High MPG is useless when you spend millions on medical bills on one person from a small car crash.)
5) Require cars to have all recalls done before they can be registered. (Every year or every other year depending on how long tags are good for.)
a) The delay of parts is not an acceptable excuse.
b) The recall has to be acceptable without pitchforks and touches from customers...
c) This would take a massive inspection program and recall database - but it is one way to avoid some cars falling through the big recall cracks we have today and killing more people.
6) And the big one is getting a plan together that won't take years to complete.

The driver side airbag recall parts are showing up now.Be pateint this will not get done over night. My dealer is a small one in the big picture,we show 5800 that need to be done from my store.

I received a second notice and both have been for the passenger side airbag. The second notice says no replacement parts are available, and when they are available, I will receive another notice to contact my local dealer for the recall. In the mean time, don't have a wreck. (I added that last sentence). :-laf

Maybe we should all have a standard indemnification form handy for anyone who rides in the front passenger seat. Make them sign it so we are indemnified and the blame is placed squarely on Dodge and Takata.

Well my shotgun has been replaced, and when I asked, it was the driver side only.
I was very picky and looked who made the unit, and it wasn't Takata.
Funny thing, I looked at the mail box before I went down for the recall replacement, and my notice was there saying they will call when the parts come in.
The unit was in 1 1/2 hours later.

Got my notices yesterday for all my trucks except for the old and reliable 92' !!! I guess I'll park the other four trucks and send the crews out in the 92'! Thank God it's a club cab!!!
