Please forgive the beginner questions, I’m not a Dodge CTD owner yet, but I’m currently looking for one. I have run across a truck for sale that, while it’s not exactly what I was looking for, could be quite a deal. Normally, great deals seem to pass me by or I’m a day late and a dollar short, so when a deal seems to be too good to be true, I tend to assume it is and just go the other way. For some reason I keep returning to this deal with more and more real consideration on my part. Before I jump into the deep end, I’d like to ask for some guidance and advice from the folks on this website who know a whole lot more about Cummins powered Dodge trucks than I do.

My neighbor (and friend) has his father in law’s Dodge CTD truck in his front yard for sale. It’s been there for a couple of months now, I’ve never really given it much thought as it is 2wd and I have been looking for a 4wd for my daughter. Just for grins I wandered over the other day and was talking to my neighbor about the truck. It is a 1997 SLT 3500 club cab 2wd 5 speed dually with 375,000 miles. See picture below.

All the sheet metal looks good with no dents or past accident damage apparent; a couple of minor dents are in the rear bumper. The silver paint is failing on the hood and roof. Tires are fine for now. No broken or cracked glass, the trim all looks nice, and it has a camper shell on the back, the bed’s been Rhino lined. It has both a bumper hitch and a removable gooseneck hitch in the bed. All in all, it doesn’t look near as beat up or worn out as I would expect a truck with 375k on it to look.

My neighbor knows I’m a gearhead and sensed my interest. He looked at me and said “You know Mike, there has been absolutely no interest in this truck, probably because of the mileage, you ‘ought to offer my father in law a couple of grand, I bet he’d take it. ”

“2000 bucks?” I said, you got time for a test drive?

The truck started just fine, maybe 3 seconds of cranking before the engine caught: hadn’t been started for a month. Seemed to idle just fine. The clutch worked fine, but it seemed to me the pressure point was pretty far off the floor: is this an indication the clutch is worn and may need replacing soon or is it normal? I drove the truck for about 15 minutes, at a variety of speeds up to 75 MPH. No unusual tendencies, no front end wandering, tracked straight and stopped straight. No unusual whining or howling during hard acceleration or no-throttle deceleration. No unusual vibrations or noises from the transmission, neighbor said it thought the transmission had been replaced at least once. Acceleration seemed on par with my 2000 Ford PSD, and the truck rode smoother than I expected a 1 ton dually to ride.

The interior is worn, but again, not to the level I'd expect from a truck with 375k on it. The heater core apparently leaked at some time, (I assume was replaced, will have to ask) so the carpeting on the passenger side is missing. The drivers seat frame is broken (I think) which allows the entire drivers seat to tip backwards way too much ( makes for fun while clutching) and the dash board is missing a couple of dials: gauges all seem to work as does the tach and speedo. Cruise isn't holding, upholstry looks fine, no holes and no cracks in the dashboard.

We popped the hood when we got back: dirty but complete and factory looking. Don’t know what modifications if any have been made. There is a significant oil leak on the front passenger side of the engine: looks like it may be coming from the timing gear case? The alternator is covered with oil, but seems to function fine.

I’d like to know more about the oil leak, I’m sure my neighbor will allow me to take the truck over to the local quarter car wash and get down thru the layers of muck to see exactly where the leak is coming from. Bad gasket OK, cracked cover, maybe KDP related?

So, am I crazy for actually considering this truck at $2000? Seems like there is plenty of value left in the old girl, 2k seems like a pretty good deal to me. Kelley BB indicates the value of this truck in “fair” condition is about 8k for a private party sell, and about 6k for trade in value. I’ll be getting the maintenance history from his father in law, just wanted other opinions as well.

Thanks again,

Mike Bennnett

i would buy that truck for $2000 if the truck runs its not kdp. i would look at the oil filter adapter it has a seal and can leak also the line to the turbo and the return be careful washing the motor if make sure its cool or you can crack the exaust manifold and do other bad stuff

id bet the kdp has bitten this truck i have been told that a majority of the time the pin goes around the gear and cracks the case and the pin actually falls into the oil pan truck will run fine just leak lots of oil. Unfortunately the fix is quite a lot of work the cam has to come out or the gear has to be pulled etc. Look on the passengers side of the gear case down by the alternator and see if you can find a big honking crack?

Even if the KDP bit that truck's worth $2K. Especially if you can do the work yourself. If it's not a California truck (EGR and 160hp) it's a definite steal.

That truck is a steal even if it doesnt run at 2000! Heck Ill give ya 3000 if ya get it to me in cash and Ill pay the fuel bill getting here!

2k for a 2nd gen 12 valve, I'd buy that so fast that it would make your head spin. A 2 grand truck will let you do a lot to it. You could put a new engine and a southbend clutch in it and you'd still have a nice truck for under 10 grand.

Thanks for the help.

I'm hopefully going to find some time on Sunday to look into that oil leak. I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions regarding the value in this truck. There is no guarantee his father in law will accept a 2k offer, but we're going to see! :D

The truck is in California, though I'm not sure it's a "california" truck. Is the EGR system easy to spot and how do I tell if it's a 160HP version?

Thanks again,

Mike there is a plate on the drivers side of the timing cover that will tell you what HP rating it is and also the EGR stuff makes the engine compartment look like crap.

The oil leak is probably the front main leaking since the oil is slung to the passengers side when running. It is part of the service procedure when doing the KDP anyways if you pull the front cover to tab it.

Now hurry up and get your offer to him before he sells to someone else!

Mike,

I suspect that you could take the VIN to a Dodge dealer and he can tell you if that truck was built to California's emissions standards.

Also... Did you buy the truck?

Loren

Thanks again for all the great advice.

I got to bring the truck over to my house and look closely at it for a couple of hours. 215 hp engine and no EGR stuff that I could see. Crawled underneath from back to front, oily but nothing really bad. Pinion tight, driveshaft u joints OK, only a little wiggle in the transmission output bearing.

Little nervous under the hood though. Oil filter was loose, engine was just over 3 quarts low. Oil pressure was 40 psi at idle though. Inside radiator looks like brown muddy water, not a hint of antifreeze, though it seemed to cool fine and the heater/defroster worked as it should.

Drove the truck for almost 100 miles at both freeway speeds and stop and go stuff, no surprises noted: it drives and handles well. All instruments seem to work and accessories function fine. Tach has a glitch, twice during the drive it just went to zero suddenly and stayed there momentarily. The check engine light glowed momentarily also, then went out when the tack came back.

I made an offer today of 2k, we'll see. I may be crazy, we'll see.

if there isn't a gallon of oil on the ground, it's not the KDP

why do you think you're crazy to offer $2k? that's a $5-6k truck EASY... like really easy

Wow! A 97 215 Hp 5spd. They are hard to find. Sounds like a deal. Mike, I live up near Oakhurst in Ahwahnee with my 97 dually 5 spd. If you get a Cummins we can talk diesels some time. Make sure its not an out of state truck that might have rust damage to it. Might be worth a carfax check for some piece of mind.

Good Luck,

Dave

some brands of filters are notorious for leaking. Mine has had leaking filter 2 or 3 times when not put on tight enough. grab it quick if it drives good.

not like i need another truck but id snap that beast up with little thought for anything under 4k but theres a lotta cummins diesel heads closer then me to that truck if you don't buy it
