Is this true on how to read a transmission?

1st number is the number of gears

2nd number is the torque rating (In 100 Lbs. )

3rd Letter is Drive Axle

4th Letter is type. Electronic or Hydraulic

47RE= 4 gears, 700 ft lbs of torque rating, rear wheel drive, Electronic

well considering that the 5. 9 w/ that transmission only made 400 ftlbs and it still tore it apart in stock i don't think thats what that number means. but i have been wrong before

I agree though, it was just something I came across, thought I would see what others thought about it.

The Second digit in the code is for the toughness rating 1-9 the higher the number, the tougher the transmission. That was per dieseltruckresource.com

This is correct! It is just a rating number, the higher the stronger. Another example:

31TH =

3 forward speeds

1 torque rating

T transaxle

H hydraulic control

42LE =

4 forward speeds

2 torque rating

L longitude installation (this is transaxle in LH series cars)

E Electronic controls
