Take Time to Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald

31 years ago on the night of November 10th she broke apart and sank in Lake Superior.



The local library will likely have a documentary if you care to learn about the history of the great ship.

She was a mighty ship, If i remember right one of the largest for the great lakes. It's a shame 29 men went down with her to bottom.

When I was younger I heard the song from Mr. Lightfoot and kinda sparked my intrest about the Fitzgerald I knew a little bit about it, but i never recall hearing how many guy's were from ohio

The Discovery Channel or the History Channel (or one of those tech channels) did a documentary on the wreck some time ago. It investigated the possible theories of how it may have sank. Was a very intertesting show- Maybe they will re- run it this weekend.

I've stood on the Lake Superior shoreline just north of the western entrance of the Portage Canal watching a November storm. My hat's off to anybody sailing on the Lakes.

There is a lighthouse on Lake Havasu with a plaque that commemorates the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Actually, it's a geocache site too.

When thinking about the Great Lakes, people often forget just how big they are compared to many of the "seas" in many parts of the world. Definitely need to be respected. Very humbling how much power the "lakes" posess.

Same here. . my old man used to work on her occasionially on Lake Erie outside of Buffalo.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but hundreds of vessels have gone to the bottom of the Great Lakes. Those Canadian winds can turn them into very deadly waters.



One of the hazards of taking in your lines. As has been said before, "A Ship in Port is Safe. But That's Not What Ships are For. "

Sorry I should have rephrased that... In more Modern times. I can only immagine what it took to take down a great ship, the size and stature of the Fitzgerald. Aren't todays ships larger yet?
