The vacuum created by the filter is going to be related to the BOMBing you've done. The higher the flow through the stock filter, the higher the vacuum. The size of the filter may have to be increased with increased boost/flow through the filter. I don't know what the flow limit would be through the stock box setup.
Typical filter restriction alarm levels for industrial engines is around 15" H2O column, turbo or not.

NO worries... I just installed a K&N in the stock air box, used the grease supplied on bottom of filter and am not gonna beat myself up worrying about it. the black sooty substance some people are reporting on the turbo was there after 35000 on stock filter.

illflem, you got it about right. If you put the filter in correctly and leave it alone most work great. My K&N has been in there for quite sometime and I do pull the hose off the turbo inlet from time to time doing research on the turbo and the blades are spotless. I'm doing mine about half of what your doing, at 50 thousand miles I'm throwing it away and buying a new one.
Put a good coat of grease on the turbo side of the filter lock the clips and leave it alone!! regards Pete

Like a couple of guys above, I've had a K&N on my early '91 since new - now have over 100,000 miles, and have absolutely NO evidence of dust or other contamination on the turbo inlet or blades.

As far as "power increases" with the K&N - forget it! what little there is in SOME installations is usually microscopic - I use K&N for its long life and performance in really dusty situations, not mythical power increases!

And yeah, paper filters WILL filter better when dirty too - but at that point, unlike the K&N, they are ALSO seriously restricting airflow!

I know we all would like only the cleanest air making it's way into our engines, so why haven't we tested the oil for contaminates? I'm talking a before and after K+N/fleetguard test for cilicates in the oil. I know alot of you may test your oils, so how about 3k with the stock airbox and fleetguard - (drop and test the oil) then 3k with the K+N and test the oil? If removing the filter to visualize dirt hurts the filter, why not take an oil sample instead?
