Feeling Good Again

Renovating my house and I'm considering using a tankless water heater. Still trying to decide whether it'll be gas or electric. Hoping that any TDR members with first hand knowledge about the above can help me narrow my decision. Are the savings worth the expense? Can they keep up with demands from multiple users? Any brand recommendations? Currently looking at Paloma, Bosch, Takagi heaters. House is approx. 2500 sq. ft. w/ 2. 5 baths. I've done some internet research but I'm looking for info from guy's that actually have these. Thanks for your time and consideration. :)

Water heater

I went with a Rinnai. Installed about 8 months ago. I will never go back to a tank again! My house is exactly the size of yours and I live in (Tennessee) a cooler climate. Never run out of hot water while taking a shower, washing clothes, and dishwasher at the same time. Mine is gas, I don't think the electric can perform as well. The unit is mounted outside the house, freed up some valuable space in the garage. The only draw back is the initial cost. I had to have a 1 inch line all the way to the unit. It will however pay for itself after only 5 or 6 years.

When exploring the tankless option for my home the factor that ruled me out was water hardness. Mine was too durn thick, should be no problem on the Big Island. How about solar for you? When I worked on Kauai for a year my house had solar assisted electric hot water, heater rarely ran.

TANKLESS WATER HEATER

I have a new one I would like to sell, new in box! Change of plans in farming so do not need this heater. Looks like shipping could be spendy! I do think the better quality the water the better a tankless would work. The one I have is for propane! The solar sound like a good option! jps

Thanks for the info guys, I'll look into the solar option, don't know why I didn't flash on that. Water hardness isn't really a problem here. The house is near the beach and is fairly sunny, corrosion might be more of a problem for a roof mounted solar setup. JPS shipping rates to Hawaii are a rip especially w/ UPS or FedX. I try to shop only from companies that ship via USPS priority mail. What model tankless do you have?

JPS:

The propane unit can be changed to natural gas with only an orfice change or drilling out the propane orfice. Most any natural gas distribution tech will carry a set of orfice drills.
