I've done a search and none of the posts address 2nd gen 12 valves. Is it possible, or futile, to replace the tappet cover gasket without removing the IP? If it can be done, I envision having to remove the vac pump/ps pump assy and the fuel filter for access. Am I way off base?

Gary, I have been told you cannot get to the forward bolt with the IP in place. PITA for sure. Also understand it is an all day job to R&R the P7100. Hope you find a better solution.

That is the same thing that Michael at Hot Rod Diesel told me. Guess I'll be going to see him after I get back to TX.

You need to remove the P7100 injection pump and the fuel filter canister from its housing to access the side cover. I suggest 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive between the gasket and the cover and gasket to block. Be sure the mounting bolt rubber washers (captive inside cupped steel washers) are replaced too. It wold be best to re-time the injection pump but you can just use the timing blade on the side of it with the engine at TDC. The whole job should take a day.

Thanks Joe, thought that was the case. Mine is ok for now. Haven't seen you since you and Piers came to Kerrville Tx back in what, maybe '98. Had a good time at Buckhorn Resort that weekend. Very informative for sure. You two know what it is all about.

GAmes have you ever had the pump off for a tune up or calibration? Would be a good excuse to get that done if you have to take it off anyway, in factory trim P7100s were hardly fine tuned for optimal performance (not HP wise but in terms of drivability & smooth operation).

I r+r'd my pump 1 hr to get off, 1 hr to put it back on today. Needed to fix an oil leak on it.

I have done it a few times so Im sorta familiar with all the nuisances but I cant see it taking a first timer more then 3 hrs.

Not sure what a tune up is. The closest shop I know of is about 80 miles from here. I've had mine set to 15. 7 for many, many miles. Other than that have not touched it.

According to one old TDR article I read the P-pump has 27 different adjustments that can be made to it.
