 Upon returning from trip up north,I have picked up strings and strings of hot tar liquid all over my truck and RV. This stuff is nasty. A razor has removed the bulk off the windshield still leaving traces to be cleaned with nail polish remover, but this week-end I will attempt to remove it from the paint. Any suggestions? How is Gunks' bug and tar remover on clear coats? :(

Tar remover

Have had gool luck with Turtle Way bug and tar remover. I like the spray kind so you don't have to rub it on. Straight naptha is real good, just buy a large can of Zippo lighter fluid. Be careful with it in hot temps, and watch for ignition sources. Flash point is about 110 F. but safer than gasoline. It will still light up your life if not careful.

Denny:) :) :)

Bug and Tar remover wont hurt your clear coat. Just be sure and wax anywhere you used it since it removes wax. WD40 works for some stuff, i dont know about tar.

Have had the same problem, just the other day. You can use Kerosene, and even good old Diesel fuel. You might even find oderless kerosene in some hardware stores. This should not hurt the clear coat. You will need to wax after. :)

WD40...WHAT WON'T IT DO?!?

Thanks for all the input! Never thought to use the WD... and never knew NAPA sold it by the gallon! Is that a gallon aerosol can?. . hee. . hee. :D

Before WD-40 came around they used to use carbonated water if that wasn't handy they used 7-Up or sprite.

But mineral spirits ( paint thinner) sounds good too.

Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol will help remove the WD-40 residue and whatever remaing titbits of the tar. :) Soak a soft cloth with rub alcy and let it, not your muscels do the work, just keep it wet and moving (as they say) and your clear coat should remain unscathed. Of course be prepared to spend the rest of the day applying a coat of wax. We use Liquid Glass, about 16 bucks for a pint sized can of cream, excellent stuff though. And it's supposed to last at least a year, used it last july on our 94 Miata and the water still beads off it. Good Luck!
