Thanks, TDR Staff
Just got me a new taurus judge. :-laf got the public defender variant and so far I love it except for the cost of 45 long colt. I hope I never have to use it for what its intended for but I know it will do a hell of a job if that time comes. All in all I am happy with it and believe I will have it for a very long time to come.

Dad bought one a few years ago. The first time you fire it it gets your attention. Very nice gun. Dad keeps it with him all the time and I agree... . if it's used for what it's intended it will do a hell of a job. They now make 410 shells just for the Judge.

As far as self defense goes, there was an interesting case in my area a week and half ago. Seems a guy broke into his ex wifes house with the intention of shooting her with a shotgun. Long story short, he was subdued by the man of the house. The man of the house actually choked the bad guy to death with one arm while he was calling 911 with the other hand. Bad guy picked the wrong house to break in. Randy:eek:

He better watch out. The anti-arm people will be looking to outlaw fore-arms because they kill people... ...

I cant remember the name of the magazine, it's one from the NRA, but my favorite part of it is were it has stories about where people defended thierselves with firearms. there are some pretty good ones in there.

American Rifleman.

In the "Armed Citizen" section. I actually know a man who was in one of the stories. An old timer (I think he has passed now) basically said, as he held his . 45 on some young punk, "I'm too old to put up with this crap!"

bought a Judge last summer, I like it alot. Nice to know you can clear the halls without the worry of a bullet going through the whole house.

I have a 3" Judge and so far the only ammo I put through it has been standard Winchester. The rifling caused the pattern to open quicker than I would prefer. It is definitely a short range weapon. Winchester now makes, or at least catalogs some . 410 buckshot for home defense. I haven't had the chance to try it yet. I've read that the Federal and Paraklese buckshot designed for the Judge is harder lead so it doesn't deform as much and patterns better.

If you are thinking of using the Judge for home defense because #8 shot won't penetrate gypsum board walls you may want to reconsider. Anything that won't penetrate a house wall won't penetrate a human body very well either. You may seriously wound the attacker, and he may eventually bleed to death, but the shot won't STOP him. A wounded, ****** off drugie could do you a lot of harm before he expires. Most professionals who carry shotguns for defense use 00 buckshot (in a 12 gauge gun)to get adequate penetration.

I have a ultra light with Paraklese 000 Buck and also load it up with Buffalo Bore 45 LC +P. Upon further research I think I should have gotten a Magnum Research model.

While I am here I ask you guys what caliber I am missing, I feel like I need one more to complete my collection, I have a 380 LCP, a 38 chief special and the Taurus Judge. I feel like a caliber is missing? Its either a 22 or something massive? but I can't figure if its a 357 or not? 357 and a 45 colt? how close are they?

. 357 is one of the best rounds out there for all around duty. At one time, it was considered the best man-stopper available. I have a Ruger SP 101 5-shot . 357 for a carry gun. It is small and compact and stainless. Randy

40 is great, and 45 in a 1911 makes angels sing, but my go-to is a P229 in 9mm. It's a compromise caliber, but it's a medium sized weapon with a 10 round mag. 10 round is the max here in CA. If a Judge was legal in CA, it'd be within 4 steps of the bed instead.

on edit; if you aren't going to shoot it much and just plant it for protection, a revolver is the way to go. Right now I keep a S&W 686 (357 mag) loaded with 38 hollow-points in the four step range. It'll shoot the 357 fine, but that round is a bit much to be spraying around the house in the dark. A 38spl HP is a good round for the hallway. It all depends what you're using it for. For that matter, shotguns make a big bang. I just don't care for the length.

IMHO, They make a great physical force multiplier at toe to toe distances. Nothing like a vertical butt stroke to the brain housing group to confuse the perp:-laf. Course thats after you hit him with a slug or two. That is, if he's still alive and has some fight left!

There is an off chance that a perp, entering your home may be wearing body armor. While you can still eliminate the threat, it is more difficult because you are limited to smaller targets(with a 9mm). A slug(or 2), in the chest is more likely to end the fight, PDQ! GregH

I guess I should be clearer ,I have the Judge for defense, I was thinking more of a fun gun, maybe a 22 or a 17. I think the 45 LC would scare off a bear if needed. I may go with a shot gun I am itching for a Bennelli or a Remington or a Mossberg. Just cant make up my mind.

As far as fun guns goes, you can't beat a 22 semi-auto pistol. Everybody can shoot it and you can shoot alot for the cost of ammo. The more you shoot= the better shot you become. Randy

You say the Judge is not legal in CA? I believe any 45 LC will also chamber a 410 , Magnum Research makes a few nice pieces as does Ruger Colt too, When I let that 410 go out of the Judge its all fire and smoke.

I think you would need a shoulder holster to carry that bugger. Its big and heavy, for me its a house guardian ,coyote and black bear deterrent . Then again it would take out a crazed raccoon pretty well also. My neighbor has the most annoying parrot... ... ... hmmm
