I am a newbie to the Cummins game having just bougt my first. ( Got tired of Ford gasoline injection shortcommings!) It is a 96 with auto transmission and no mods YET!! The TC unlocking with throttle position drives me nuts!! I am looking for input reguarding kits that let you control the lock / unlock of TC. I don't pull heavy. I live in Alaska so trans hi temps arent a problem. Cold can be a problem. Also --I have sidelined her till I can kill the lurking monster KDP. Glad I was told about TDR!

Welcome to TDR!

Is your truck jumping in and out of OD or just unlocking/locking the TC. If it's the OD problem try cleaning your TPS.

No -- it isn't jumping in and out like TPS complaints -it is working properly. The complaint I have is every time you let off the foot feed the TC unlocks and there is no engine breaking. If you hold foot feed on just a bit lock up stays engaged -- so when you are in hill country or in traffic you have to be very mindfull of throttle position to maintain engine breaking. Also it is sort of agervating to hear it rev up and then re engage everytime you are in and out of throttle.

You need something like the DTT Smart controler. There are other brands out there but I run one on each of my trucks and love them.

Rod,

You can install a switch to control lock up. The draw back to that is that you have control the lock up manually and may damage your transmission if it is misused. The advantage is that it is cheap.

E-mail me for KDP fix instructions.

As per Joe George if a simple switch will do the task what is with the DTT controler @ $$$? What does it do versus " A SWITCH" ?? I had looked at those online and that is what got me started on this question. Any others out there with the smart boxes can tell me the ups and downs of them and what to avoid in their use?

Wasilla Rod do you have the TDR issue 44? If you do go to page 30 and look at the wiring picture. There is a orange/black wire that you can ground with a three position switch from Radio Shack. Its a tiny switch you can buy for about $3. 00, one position you can lock the TC, another you can unlock it, and the third position you can leave to the PCM. You must also bypass the TC relay located in the fuse box under the hood. A good friend helped me hook this up and he knows a great deal about CTDs. I can also take pictures of this on my truck and send them to you, this will help you understand clearly what I'm talking about. Let me know If I can help you with this, HC.

When selecting wires to cut, make sure they are identified by pin number. I think there are more than one Orange/Black wires at the PCM connector.

Remove the PCM connector and you can see the numbering for the pins on the pin side.

The Mystery switch is a handy tool if used properly. Don't use it for drag racing. You will destroy it but it is a great tool when using an exhaust brake.
