Hello to all, my name is John Clark and I have been lurking on this board for almost two years. I would just like to thank everyone for this tremendous board. I don't know if you people (posters and moderators) realize how much help this board provides to people who are proud Ram/Cummins owners. I finally became a member on december 28 and this is my first post. Don't know why it took so long for me to join but I am glad I did. Once again, Thank You all and remember that "Ignorance is bliss but knowledge is a lot more fun so let the bombing begin. "

Now for question. Noticed that while accelerating and going through the 45 to 50 mph range. The transmission would lock-up, the engine rpm's would drop and if I stayed on the throttle it would feel like clutch slippage and the engine rpm's would rise and fall based on what I was doing with the throttle. Also, while cruising at 70 mph, if I try to accelerate to fast it feels like it would shift down. If I accelerate slow enough (lighter on the throttle), it won't shift down and I would actualy speed up faster than if I apply too much throttle. Anyway, I went to our local 5 star dealer and they hooked up the code reader and we went for a ride.

After cruising for a while, they decided that it was the TPS. A new TPS was installed and we went for another ride. The truck still did the same things. They went to a screen on the code reader that showed the condition of the TC. Once we got to the 45 to 50 mph range, the tc would lock and stay locked even when we felt the slippage feeling. Same with the 70 mph senario. Bottom line is they said my tc is slipping. They removed the new TPS and I began to plan my fate.

Now for some truck facts. (I am still working on my signature). Its a 1997,2500 4X4 Auto, ext cab long box with 3. 54 Limited slip diff. There are 102,000 miles on the truck and a tst # 8 plate was installed at the 70,000 mile mark. Everything else (including transmission) is still stock. This is my everyday work truck and hobby farm truck and I do pull my fair share of trailers (15,000 max).

I am 99% sure of what I want to do but I would like to get some other opinions. Please let me know if any other information is needed and I thank you for your time, John. Sorry for the long post.

Ditto that. Contact DTT!

They will help you if your trans can be saved without a rebuild and if it needs a rebuild and a TC they WILL DO IT RIGHT!

At 102K miles I would either baby it around, drive it hard and let it blow, or rebuild and upgrade now. You have enough miles that a responsible vendor is not going to sell you a VB with much higher pressures to put in and speed the death even more. The plate ate the TC, you could try another TC (cheap used one) and slightly higher pressures to see if you can milk another year or more out of it too. MHO.

T/C

John, Your truck and mine did the same thing at about the same mileage. The T/C was about shot and the transmission was shot. I cured all of my transmission problems with a BD transmission and T/C with a pressure lock. I'll probably get electronically flamed for telling you there are other choices when it comes to transmissions. My BD has been excellent. It’s your money shop around. I think you will find as I did that BD offers an excellent product. Driving is truly believing, I’m a BD believer. You didn’t post where you live. If you live in the Northwest, check out the Power Shop in Enumclaw, WA. Chuck and his crew will take good care of you.

John welcome......

... To the club, I can flash my converter 300-400 RPM at 1500, yep it is a sick puppy, but I have the fix in place, just got the DTT stuff ordered for the full upgrade... ..... DTT the land were Dodge trannies are all good.

Yep ... . a lot of go into the yard and pluck the money off the tree advice here... Yes a DTT upgrade would be the cats A$$ but do you have the coin to pluck. ?? $3000. 00 for a complete rebuild and my friends here are right , that is the ultimate in auto upgrades . I am in the same boat ,To much torque but not enough sticky , When pulling I have gotton very familiar with this monsters twist and have adjusted to the transmission's cry for help . If you play your cards right you can easily squeeze another 50,000 miles out if the wallet is tight 'And when it happens my friends at Visa will give me the O. K. to pass go and proceed to DTT, But until then I will not get to cocky with the pedal when towing . If you need some time do every thing you can to get the feel of your truck and to know when you are pushing your transmission over the threshhold , Not to offend any members here since a DTT is great advice but money is money... ... . P. S I can't wait till my transmission blows for the upgrade... ... ... . Just my . 02 cents worth

Good morning all and thanks for the informative posts. What I wanted, from anyone who would post, is to see what you would do (or have done) when in the same situation as me. Thats why I did not tell you that I already have an appointment with DTT. I hope I did not break any posting rules by not being up front in the first place but I have a secondary reason for this post. As I type, I am printing this thread out and going to show it to my wife and father. They both think I am nuts for spending $3000+ dollars on a truck that is five years old and has 100,000 miles on it. "Why not have it rebuilt here or just install another stock transmission, after all you did get 100,000 miles out of the first one. "

I also keep second guessing myself. On one hand, thats alot of money for this truck. Then on the other hand, thats alot of truck and I plan to keep for a long time and with this upgrade it sounds like it will be a blast to drive.

JeffMic, thanks for your post. I never really looked at the BD stuff until you mentioned it and I guess maybe I should have. I did a lot of research on this site and DTT kept popping up. It would have been a shorter drive. I live in SW montana and will be driving to Abbotsford next week.

Once again, thanks to all and I appreciate your time, John.

The DTT VB & TC are the BEST upgrades I have done to my truck so far. You will love the power and performance. When your up at DTT, have Stefan (Bill's son) take you for a ride in his RAM:--)

New Transmission - YES !

I'm in almost your exact same boat. I have a '95 with 145k miles and my TC is shuddering bad from 3 to 4th gear.

I too will be installing a new DTT trans.

However, there is one difference in how I arrived at DTT. My mechanic told me about them and said that they were the very best transmission he'd ever installed (although is is very partial of the $6k Allisons). Everyone he's installed them for LOVES them and swears by them. I even called a guy in our area to "kick tires" and see how his DTT trans was performing... . I couldn't get him off the phone. I finally said that I'd meet him some day and test drive it.

I have a wife and 4 kids. $$ is hard to come by. That's why I'm going to go DTT. I can't afford to put poor quality, low performance, stock material back into my rig. AAMCO trans. quoted me at least $2700 for them to rebuild it and I'll guarantee they can't hold a candle to DTT.

I considered just replacing the TC and Valve Body, but got a resounding NO from all I spoke with. Just doesn't make sense to put anything into a transmisison with as many miles as yours or mine.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone, I am feeling much better about the negative cash flow that I am about to go through. I will post late in the week of Feb 10 to let you know my experience (good and/or bad).

Hope you enjoy the Super Bowl commercials, John.

I'll play devil's advocate...

And probably get flamed by the DTT fan club but here goes:

If the T/C slip is the only problem you are having, it's likely you could get by with a T/C and valve body from one of 2 vendors. The rest of the trans should be OK if you changed fluid and filters like you should have.

I chose a Goerend Brothers T/C, did the work myself (with Daves phone assistance) and have less than $475 in the total upgrade (including the Amsoil). The difference between before and after is night and day.

I realize that most here think DTT is the best efficiency wise and it may be (I still haven't gotten a ride in a DTT truck yet), but in my case I couldn't justify spending the extra $$.

DTT and Others?

I have a unique idea, lets quit worrying about being flamed by the DTT folks and give an honest answer to fellow TDR members when they ask for transmission advise. It seems that almost every post that does not suggest DTT for upgrades or worse yet says something negative about DTT get censored or electronically tarred and feathered. Look back and you will find numerous post prefaced by “I hope I don’t get flamed by the DTT fan club” or words to that effect. It is quite evident that DTT makes an excellent product and Bill K. has earned the almost cult like following he has. I am sure if someone suggest something else DTT won’t go out of business. This is an open forum speak out, give fellows members the facts as you know them. As the DTT folks say driving is believing, and I don’t doubt that. But on this forum what you read is still opinion. We have lots of opinions out there let’s hear them. Quit worrying about what other people think, I haven’t since I got out of high school. Jeff:D
