Hey guys I already know everybody says to go all out the first time but here's what I've got. 05 Edge Juice/Att. , AFE stage 2, with analog guages as well. I'm not planning on going much past 100HP increase, I commute a long way and tow a boat-no sled pulling, drag racing, twin turbos, sticks, tripple chipped use intended. I'm just asking if a DTT TC and tow valve body will hold up to my expectations of better shifting and power delivery-hate the 1-2 and 3-4 lag, defuel :{ . Truck pulls like a train if I roll into it and wait until it locks up to get on it. I've got 36K on her now about 75% highway with no complaint other than the "soft" TC. Thanks in advance, Ryan.

IMHO, w/ yours being an '05, your installer will probably recommend an upgraded flexplate as well. If you don't ever plan on upgrading to more power, your TC & VB should be fine. If your also wanting more fuel, I would add a DPP 95 fuel pump to the mix, then you'll be set. Just my $. 02

Good question

I am interested in this also. I fully believe in doing it right the first time. But if you don't bomb too much, the 48re with a TC and VB might be enough. How much is the stock 48re good for with a TC and VB?

I'm not sure if it is a real problem but the DTT vb raises line pressures BIG TIME! It might play hell on the stock accumulator piston and servos, seals etc. But again I'm not sure. Call DTT and ask, those dudes are Very helpful, they operate on quality and reputation so they wont try to sell you things you don't need.

Check with DTT again. When I do a DTT trans, for the reasons you list above, I still do more than a TC/VB, even on an 05. This is a topic that comes up probably everytime Dodge does a truck redesign.

A recent example. 05, stock power, with 35's, doesn't tow, drives easy, 18K miles.

Pull it apart, what do I find. 2nd gear band and 3rd gear clutches already getting burnt. Enough, that I wasn't about to keep them in. And also, the 05's went back to 5 clutches on the O/D indirects, so I bump it to 6, along with the front drum(3rd gear).

You have to have it out, it isn't that much more work to check out everything else, and get it right from the beginning. This way, you have no worries about the stock internals holding up.

Thanks for the input! What do they get into in the r&r process of the trans- do most guys inspect it that carefully? I'm also going to get a billet flexplate, ballpark how much more for a update kit without going overboard?

how much is big time? what were your stock readings on the line pressure? the line pressure is easily changed on the dodge trans. I would like to know how much they crank it up. you will be putting on some electronics as well to fool the ecm and let the trans down shift , that or second gear starts ,and fast up shifts will be normal. well I must say I have been told some use another vb mod, and it may be dtt that uses a relief in the vb to lower it at idle. if so do any of you get a code once and awhile?

transmission

What does R&R mean???? Whats the difference between the flexplate on an '05 & one on an '06. Im having TC/VB flexplate done this wednesday... all Suncoast. Cant wait to get her back Oo.

Had an 01 w 360 injectors, Edge Comp box, exhaust, yada yada... ...

Installed a DTT VB and TC and ran it 433,000 miles. No other upgrades.

Oh yea they also put a shift kit in it. B&M I believe.

I would hope their vb had a shift kit already.

I talked to Dave Gorand (spelling ?) a few days ago and he said that a TQ swap on a stock 05 would work out fine. He also said that a small tow box, 50-60 hp would still be fine. Anything over that would require a VB change. Sounds like it is a pretty good transmission to me but I don't know for sure. You know after all these years and all the trouble that Dodge has had with their trannys they would either hire some engineers that could design and build a transmission that is at least as tough as the engine they are using or buy them from somebody that can build them right in the fist place huh. Seems like any time you want to add something to your truck to give it a little more umph you get stopped in your tracks because of questionable transmission. Ok I'm done, sorry.

I run just a suncoast torque converter, flexplate, and a $70 shift kit in my 05. The truck is a dually crew cab 4x4 with a camper top (8,040 pounds). It runs13. 80's and pulls 10-11,000 pounds great. . I've never pulled any heavier with it. Hope this helps. .

Dave Goerend told me the exact same thing, just a TC if stock or w/60hp box.

I had his single disk installed in oct '05 and couldn't be happier.

Didn't notice any slippage w/ the quad on 100hp. Granted, I always run empty. And empty, the tires are the "fuse" in the drive line :-laf

I know what you mean by 'soft TC'. With a tighter TC, the rpm's actually drop between shifts !!

Mine stalls around 1800rpm at WOT (vs 2800 w/stock TC), a tiny bit higher w/ 100hp

and at 1600 rpm at 1/2-3/4 throttle. (Btw, what I mean by stall is tach stuck at 1600 while speedo goes up. it only lasts a couple of seconds)

Tach drops about 150rpm or so at lockup.

All in all, the truck now pulls great in every gear :)

How much was your single disk converter from Dave? I'm thinking of using his stuff in my truck. Does your truck shift a little bit firmer now with just the TQ swap? Boy I hate the thought of " having to re-invent the wheel " just to have a better pulling , towing, driving truck! Did it help the performance ? 0-60 and 1/4 mile times? Don't get me wrong ,I'm not drag racing anymore but I still relate to performance up grades that way, you know old ways and old habits die hard!

I hear you, it stinks that Dodge didn't put a tighter TC from the factory.

I couldn't stand to see the tach go up and down like the engine was spinning in mush.

I thought about trading for a manual, but sales tax/reg alone would have cost me more that a new TC.

Last year, it was $650, or $800 with the billet ring instead of the tabs on the cover. That's the one I have.

The shifts feel firmer because the rpm's drop, like in a manual.

Heck, when coming to a stop, you can feel the engine lugging before the transmission downshifts, and when it downshifts into 1st, you can feel it !! I love that.

Don't know about 0-60 or 1/4 yet. The only truck event up here is in September. I ran 16. 40 last year, stock with 315's
