Hey Admin, this one is for you. My Mom, who isn't even a TDR member, received this email from Ken recently:

> Please, do me a favor... . clean the virus off your system.

>

> The TDR has repeatedly asked TDR members to keep up to date anti-virus

software on their computers. I am a contractor hired by TDR part-time. My

computer is my living and in the last 3 days I have received over 1000 virus

infected emails from TDR user computers, including you. This is costing me

time and money and interfering with my ability to make a living with my full

time business which I operate from my home. In effect, your lack of taking

the responsibility to protect your system from virus infection is taking

food off my family table.

Look Ken. First off, my Mom's computer is virus protected. Secondly, her computer has shown no viruses from that software. I don't know how you got her address, but please do not email her again. If you're expecting people to take care of their virus issues, I suggest you use a bit more tact in your requests, and confirm those infected before flying off the handle.

By the way, if you want to whine, I suggest you wait until the economy recovers from its recession. Just about everybody is hurting, so when you send an email like this, it only takes away from your credibility.

Good day.

I have seen a general post that asked we use anti-virus. I do and update regularily. Who is this Ken anyway? This note to your Mom does not sound like one that TDR management would condone and am surprised. If in fact he is employed by TDR he should at the least be orally repremanded and if he cannot conduct himself properly FIRED!!!

Is it possible the Ken is not part of TDR and merely using the name to promote the sale of anti-virus software? Jack if TDR won't appogize I will; as it embarrass me!!

OOPS guess I stepped in it HUH???? I should pay more attention I guess from now on. Still stand by my thoughts though. :p

Still I am sure TDR management will properly handle this problem so I will not say nothing further. Don't want to get censored!!! :(

I got a bunch of virus emails from TDR members myself. The first one got me infected, but I went and did the latest and greatest virus scan that's updated to the hour, and sure enough, I was ab le to get rid of it. Only cost me an hour and a half's time.

Of course, no problem after the first one...

If you have not updated your virus scan in the last 2 or 3 weeks... update it, and then do a scan.

Have fun. removing it involves editing your registry, deleting system files and so on.

I've been getting a LOT of e-mail from people I do not know. Some of them have ". PIF" files attached. I just delete them.

Eric

PS Could the . PIF files be viruses?

. pif files are executables. Delete the files and run a current virus scan.

The latest worm/trojan has the . pif extension.

Don~

Any executable file can be a virus. :( So unless you know who sent it and are sure they are okay don't open them. That includes zip files unless some you know the person sending a pic of there truck. Be careful and use a good virus scanner McAfee, Norton, etc. :D

good luck

Getting any responce from ken either. Sure quick to send nastygrams but no avail upon replying to answers and I didn't have a virus either ... ... just a bad program script  <hr>

When I send an e-mail I will mention the number of attachments if any and what they are. That way if someone I send an e-mail gets an extra they know it.

Likewise, when I receive an e-mail with attachments if the text does not mention the attachments I will not access them until I verify it with the sender.

So far, no viruses. I also have AVG just in case one slips thru.

Thanks guys. I dumped then scanned. All appears OK.

The computer has been a little slower latley, doing things like "detecting proxy settings" when I log onto this page. It's my home page. I dont think it's related. I dumped all my cookies, so I suppose it will run slower for a little while. :D

As a network administrator I can agree that viruses are a pain in the butt. On the other hand if you (The administrator) are up to date on your virus protection software then it should not be much of issue if people are sending the virus. Your system should catch it. If in fact that email was sent from him it shows poor professionalism and lack of good common sense. I hope you get this resolved and I hope if he did it he has learned a lesson in courtesy.

I agree with Janderson. I am also a Network Admin, and it is the Admins job to keep current virus protection on the MAIL SERVER. Expecting the general public to maintain up to date virus protection is about as realistic as seeing a Duramax pass a Cummins on a hill. Flat out ... it isnt going to happen. I dont know what mail software you use, but if you use Microsoft Exchange, I would recommend using Norton AV for Exchange, and then edit the registry to block attachments that are known to contain dangerous code.

Follow Up

I just read this thread.

For anyone offended by our Webmaster's comments, I sincerely apologize. I don't believe it was his intent to be hurtful. On one particular day last week, he received in excess of 350 different e-mails with the badtrans virus attached. Not a big deal; it just takes a little time to deal with it.

Unfortunately, it sounds like a lot of folks were hit by this particular virus.

I would understand his frustration if this was a hobby for him, but if he is getting paid to do a job then that was severely unprofessional of him. I would lose my job if I sent an email like that to one of my customers. I am not implying that he should lose his job just that this is part of doing business and an apology from him to the recipient is definitely in order.

Like stated above, I dont know what truley happend but if the story is correct I stand by my opinion and I believe just the idea of sending the email is rediculous.

Forgot to mention... Dont EVER put anything in an e-mail message that you would not want published on the front page of a newspaper. If Ken didnt know this... he does now

Like I said, Kens credibility went to nothing in my mind. It's not like he had a lot to begin with. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just being honest. The last thing the TDR members want to hear is whining from the inside. Not only does it make him look bad, but it makes the entire organization look bad. Those are my thoughts. Do what you will with Ken, it don't matter.

so if you got a email from him with a virus you'd not say anything?

Look not all antivirus software is equal. Mccfee and norton are about as differant as it comes with regard to virus detection

I LOVE NORTON why simple and easy up dates and it now (norton 2002) checks OUTGOING MAIL so you don't send anyone bad stuff.

Also it has the ability to look at files for Virus type activity and with new virus out almost daily this is a nice feature.

MY STANCE IS THE GUY DID THE RIGHT THING... . message was to the point... . and is exactly what I would have done.

so members spend a few bucks and get the most up to date anti virus software and keep it up to date or GET OF THE NET... responcible net surfing requieres we all do our part in stopping virus and thats everyones job not just the webmasters

Curt

PS

I get emotional over this issue since I regard it like letting your dog shi! in my yard.

Ken's services here on a contract basis I'm sure, and if I recall correctly, he's self employed. So, in reality, nobody pays him by the hour to deal with this kind of stuff.

It's not the email I would send out, but compared to a lot of tech geeks I've met over the last few years, he's very diplomatic and reserved in his statements. On the other hand, that's not really saying all that much... As some of the people I've met will scream obscenities at you if you are not technically proficient at everything... and in fact, think that average people should not be <i>allowed</i> to have a computer. But, like I said, that's not me, just some of the real jerks out there.

Then explain why the server logs has an entry from her address with a file attachment? The logs don't lie.

Secondly, her computer has shown no viruses from that software. I don't know how you got her address, but please do not email her again. I got her address by the reply address to the email from her system (minus the attachment). Now, if her system did not send a virus, how is it that I have both an email from her, plus a virus attached to it? The virus sends itself in the background, to any email addresses that have ever been in ANY of the email address books in Outlook.

By the way, if you want to whine, I suggest you wait until the economy recovers from its recession. Just about everybody is hurting, so when you send an email like this, it only takes away from your credibility.

If you want to question my credibility, have the facts as I did receive a virus infected email from her address.
