Can someone, please, explain the interest in HAM radio, to me? I'm pretty sure that it's ME that's missing something, here.

The only experience that I have had with HAM is with a friend of mine who had a radio in his travel trailer. While camping, everyday at a certain time, there was a "Coffee Klatch" , on the radio, where people would sign-in & just talk about the weather or their shopping trip, etc. It was a bit interesting, at first but, got rather boring after awhile.

Since many HAM's have been involved with the hobby for a lifetime (such as Gary-K7GLD), there has to be MORE to it than what I've experienced.

I would, really, appreciate it if you guys could take some time & explain what I'm missing, to me.

Thanks.

I'll be taking my Technician class license test on November 14th. I'll update this thread when I know if I've passed the test or not and if I do pass the test, I'll put up my call sign. The radio I'll be using eventually is a Yaesu HT-60.

A follow- up to my orig post HERE

It has been a long time desire to get my license to follow in my father's footsteps. He got his license in the late 30's. He passed away a little over a year ago and getting my license is in part to inherit his call sign to keep the legacy of his call sign associated with my family.

I studied and passed my Tech exam last week.

Not a very hard test, but there is still alot to learn before I get on the airwaves. I wish I tackled this before his passing so I could share in the satisfaction of passing the test with him.

There is still a lot for me to learn and I am no where near being ready to get on the air.

Can you recommend a good ham forum where I can lurk to gain some knowledge?

I am thinking of once I get the license of my dad's call sign transferred that it would be part of my tattoo memorial to my dad. Tacky or not??

I am studying for the technician test right now. I dabbled in it many years ago, but nothing ever became of it.

Just what I need, another expensive hobby:-laf:-laf

woops sorry for the double. went to get some water and the post reply page was back up with my unsent post???

A word of caution: set a reminder for ten years from now to renew your license (it goes by quicker than you'd think). The FCC DOES NOT send out renewal notices, and a year after the expiration date they revoke the license and may re-issue your call sign to someone else--no notice to you. You will have to retake all tests from the ground up if you want to start over (don't ask me how I know this). :{

It's truly a great pastime - some resist calling it a "hobby", due to the many serious as well as purely entertaining aspects it provides.

I've been licensed since 1959, held several calls - WA6KDK, WB0NUB, KJ6Q, and the current K7GLD (GLD are my initials). I've enjoyed my radio interest to the fullest, operate mobile, fixed, and portable when RVing - literally talked around the world - as well as to Astronauts in space.

Sure beats stamp collecting! Oo.

(Apologies to actual stamp collectors!) :-laf

Gary thanks for info is there a problem with the 3 rd gen trucks and having a radio due to interference with the truck elect. Computer. or anything else electrical. I have been into High power CB's but im sure you know its not the same. And I would like to get into amateur radio when I get situated in MT

Name says it all! :-laf

I think that I'm the ONLY one here in "the middle of nowhere" Wyoming :D

Not too active, but getting interested in it again and have lots to learn... 73's!!!
