The TDR has been a great resource, don't get me wrong. But it also can make you into a Dodge hypochondriac! First there was the 5th gear falling off. Then I came across the lift pump worries followed by the VP44 insomnia. Now I have to worry about the series 53 block cracks.

But someone posted a conversation on the 53 cracks they had with Cummins indicating 5000 cracks out of 300,000 units. That's less than 2% (1. 66 to be exact). Then you gotta ask how many of these 5000 were bombed and to what extent?

Not pleasant for those with the failures mentioned, but is the rate of failure that great that we need to become worry warts or are these failure rates well within the norm of the automotive world in general? Is too much information a bad thing?

Just wondering!!

Take what you read here with a grain of salt. Remember, most of us don't post with all the good things that have happened to our CTD's. If you take reasonable care, keep up with the maintenance (oil, filter, fluid, belts, etc. ) you will most likely have many years of good service. If you have a 2nd Gen with the FP problems, make sure you have installed a FP gauge. That's the best insurance against future problems. If you modify you CTD (power chips, non-stock turbo, etc. ) then install more gauges (boost, egt, transmission temp if auto, etc. ) By the way... I purchased my 2001 CTD in the summer of 2000. It has 54K on the clock and the only maintenance problems I've had are one bad lift pump and a rear end pinion seal replaced, both under warranty. That was over 3 years ago and no problems since. No "death wobble," ball joint problems, cracked block, failed 5th gear on my 5 speed, or any other deadly malady... Don't worry... Be happy... :D :D :D

Get out of the 24valve forum Runt. :D :D

I'm over 500hp with the stock lift pump and drilled banjos. I've only replaced the lift pump once do to low pressure at idle. The pressure under load was fine with that pump so I kept it as replacement. Now with my Drag Comp on 5x5 I can only drag my FP down to 7 and that's as hard as I can run the truck. Not sure if I got a good pump or what but it's been a non issue for going on 7 years now. As for the VP44 it has also been a non issue for almost 7 years, I keep it supplied with good clean fuel and it's worked great for me. A little over 6 of those years have been with the wire tapped with some for of fueling box. As for the 53 Block it to is a non issue. With over 100k on the odo I just drive it with no worries at all about that 53 on the side.

Like what was stated above. "Take what you read with a a grain of salt" Lots of people on these websites over react to stuff printed in them. Lots of usefully information here but sometimes you have to sift through the BS to find it. ;)

Mine just turned 193,000 on a 53 Block

and with my mods no problem... . I'm looking to upgrade to twins soon..... ONLY for towing heavy.....

And I thank all of you for it.

Because of this site I was able to detect a failing lift pump before it could do damage to the VP. Then instead of repairing it myself, used the warranty to get it repaired with minimum hassle. Now through the paranoia learned here, I am making improvements to the fuel delivery system to prevent damage from future failures.

I wish I would have spent more time on this site before buying.

Got it right Lube Man! You really can get alittle paranoid reading some of these posts. I just sold my '95 with 106,000 on the meter. Best truck I ever owned. Puts the Fords I had to shame. Only maintenance required, other then routine stuff (tires, brake pads, oil and filters, etc. ) was a new thermostat, done under warranty. Hope my '05 does as well!

No worries here...

Don't confuse me with the truth :p ;) :D

OK,

My truck is nearing it's 5th birthday.

The block is fine,

The lift pump works great

My 6 speed shifts like butter

My VP44 is happy

My batterys are not puking

My turbo is not covered in air filter oil

I got decent mileage out the stock Michelins

My paint is not falling off

No rattles/creaks/groans

I don got no stinking center support bearing

It's started right up everytime I've asked it to

Never thrown a trouble code

So forth and so on :D Oo.

The fit and finish is the best of any new car/truck I've had.

The truck has hauled my big arse all over Baja on God forbidden rutted roads, washes and mountains while hauling a cabover and lots of gear. It

If you you spend most of your time in the waiting room of a doctors office you will soon begin to suspect that most of the people in that town are sick or hurt. Reading the TDR trouble shooting forums will likewise soon make you think most Dodge Diesel owners are having problems too. It's just where most that do show up.

Insane with worry... ... . you bet!!!! Where am I going to get the money for a bigger turbo. ... ... How tough is it to install injectors... ... ..... When can I spare the truck to tear it down and put in a bigger clutch... ... ... . Will this straight piped 4" exhaust be too loud... ... .

You bet I'm worried... ... . but it aint about the truck breaking down! :D I love this ride

Ditto for me, but overall I am very happy with my truck, even thought it has almost nothing to make it work for the almost $2/gallon for fuel. But as a daily I like it without something to pull its fun - almost like a what driving should be like, smokey, loud and noisey.

Yea, but with an "earth ending" asteroid your warranty problems are immediately fixed, and if you owe anything on your truck... they cancel your debt... :-laf :-laf
