So the problem was??????

Still undetermined... ... but I finally bit the bullet and ordered a lift pump this morning! :(

Going down to check my pre-filter screen here in a just a few minutes, and other than timing I have no idea what could be wrong with this truck?

Spoke with Jeff Garmon today (he did work on it for previous owner) and now I'm hella scared cause he said if he did the timing on it the MINIMUM its set at is 20*! :--) :--) :--)

No wonder we were scratching our heads when we tried checking the timing last time! If its @ 20* then its WAY OFF Piers chart!

Don't worry I will keep this thread up to date, and definately figure out what the heck is wrong with this truck. I miss the way my old 97 used to run..... #10 plate full forward, PDR 370's, 3K GSK, SBC 13" FE, 16*, Scotty II and 5" stacks... ... . that dang truck would swap ends with ya if you matted it! :{

EDIT:

To date things that have been checked.

Fuel Filter changed

Over Flow valve swapped with one with a stretched spring

Fuel Press. checked with a less than reliable gauge! :rolleyes:

Gov. arm

Fuel Prefilter Screen

Ok well I checked the prefilter screen. It was as clean as a new one would be. :confused: :{

I'm out of ideas fellas, all except for lift pump. I keep going back to the same idea in my head, and Mr. Fulmer's thoughts encourage it even more.

I get a nice cloud of smoke from a dead stop, truck takes off really quick too and the smoke clears up with the slightest amount of boost.

HOWEVER! Once in the upper RPM range, it has no smoke its a dog and it doesn't really fall on its face it just doesn't move/accelerate very quickly from a "roll on. " This goes back to Jim saying that the lift pump could be supplying plenty of fuel at idle, but once under load its not supplying enough volume.

Guess I will find out Thursday night. Lift pump should be here from US Diesel Parts on then, hope its not a wasted $150.

P. S. also something antagonizing me in the back of my head is the thought that I could be running 20+ degree's of timing and not even know it! :eek:

If it's at 20 then a rap of the throttle from under the hood should tingle your teeth a little depending on injectors..... we could do this over the phone.

Wasted $150... ... heck that's not a waste, a grand is a waste.

Probably give you a call tomorrow..... we'll see.

$150 for a part there's a *chance* I might not need IS a waste when I just dropped a ton of $$ on a clutch! :-laf

I PM'd Robin and they are changing your name to "Had Smoke?" until further notice. :p

I need a smiley off of PavementSucks.com ... ... its one smiley kicking the other smiley in the nutz... . Thanks TPC! :p :-laf

Lift pump will be here Thursday... ... now how do I get my hands on it since the business UPS is supposed to deliver it too will be closed! :{

well I swapped out the lift pump tonight with a new unit from US Diesel Parts..... no change! #@$%! :{

I'm going to get my timing done next week by someone who knows what they are doing more than me! :-laf

Attempted to just *check* my timing a couple of nights this week with JR's assitance via phone, and still couldn't get TDC with the dang pin.

I guess now I do really believe timing has a lot to do with it, because even with a new lift pump I cannot break 950* pre-turbo. :confused:

Mark, one thing you can try in reference to timing...

When your truck is cold start is up and let it idle long enough to get some oil flowing. Then rev the truck up to 1600RPM or so. If, when cold, your truck revs up to 1600RPM and is running smooth your timing is probably not that far off.

It seems to me if your timing was that far off you might be having some drivability issues?

Also I would get a FP gauge that works properly and verify your fuel delivery is up to par? A couple new parts does not guarantee everything is ok.

Perhaps you have a larger quantity of air entering the fuel somewhere?

I know for a fact that it will idle smoothly @ 1600 shortly after startup, we had a few cold nights/mornings here last week and I held the motor around 15-1600 rpms to help warm it for a couple of minutes.

I'm not sure if you reading that I think my timing has slipped or is advanced. Well scroll up a few post's and you'll see why I think its VERY advanced, but I don't know for sure. Going to get a buddy of mine to do the timing, he can definately get it right! :-laf

i dont know if this has much to do with it but the screen over your fuel pickup in your tank could be clogged up. for me it was my rollover valve. that fixed my smoke problem or lack of for that matter. after i changed mine i could fog up some streets if i wanted to. i hope this helps.

Hey Got Smoke was just wondering if you got your truck figured out? :confused:

Well its better... ... I played around with the plate and Gov. arm some and that helped.

See doesn't still seem all there though, but runs pretty good now. Something still just isn't "quite" right though.

Thanks everybody for your help!

Just checking too see if you got your truck figured out? :confused:

I got it ironed out a little bit, its still not at its full potential of what it should be doing. :rolleyes:

I think part of my main problem is excessive timing, but finding someone to do it has been a royal pain in the ***!! #@$%! Had a local friend who was gonna do it, had all the special CTD tools that made it super easy to do too. He lost the box off the back of a truck he was driving so now I have no one to do timing in my area! :{

I hope to get it done on the 22nd when my KYDTR club has our annual BOMBing party @ DarrellB's pole barn in IN, we will see.

If I ever truely find out what my root problem is with this truck you can BELIEVE I will post it! :(

hi, mark

there is a trick a guy so me, was let your truck warm to operating temperature.

then floor the throttle and let off, if motor misses or white smoke comes out the exhaust. then check your return fuel valve. and if that is not it , then your timing is off . hope this help you out
