My uncle is a big fan of Great Dane's too. Is it true they don't live long?

Sadly, the average lifespan is 6-8 years. Sabrina is my 3rd dane. I've been very blessed as my first two Smokey & Ben lived 12 & 10 years respectively.

What seems to bring the lifespan average down are a too significant number of danes that don't make it much past 4 or 5 years. These are generally poorly bred danes that are huge -- over 180 lbs -- and they're prone to cancer, orthopedic problems and heart problems. The danes I've had so far have been average to small. Smokey was around 145 lbs & Ben was around 130 lbs. Sabrina is a lightweight at 92 lbs. But she just turned a year. She'll end up around 110 I'm guessing when it's all said and done. The smaller danes seem to live longer. They are medically and socially needy and they're not for everyone as they're inside dogs, messy and clumsy. Basically they're sweet, somewhat pathetic and very high maintenance.

Both about 4 years old. Starr (on right) I've had since a pup -- genius girl. RocsAyn (on left) adopted from the Sheridan shelter last August -- what a find! I have much better pictures but this has both in it and able to make the right size.

The one on the left is 9 yrs old,and we have had her for 8 of those.

The other one is a new addition, she found us a few months ago and she is SO smart... I think she is border collie, but not sure if full blood.

Me too,when i learn how to post some pics of my 2 American Bulldogs,---SOON,I have one thats 1. 5 yrs male and a 7 year old female that would ride in my truck all day long if i'd let her,even sits in when i'm working on it hoping for a ride. Hell she wait for me at the door every time when she hears the truck come and go,as well see can tell the difference between CUMMINS,FERDS AND CHEBBY'S,she only comes a runnin for a Cummins
