2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission TDR saved me $1200! Thanks Geno's!

My local dodge dealer quoted me $800 for a new starter and $400 shop time to replace my "clicking" starter. As an "informed" TDR member, I researched the problem on your website and ordered Geno's rebuild kit and fixed it myself for $35. I did break Geno's 10mm wrench on that darn top bolt, but one trip to Sears and I was done in an hour. THANK-YOU TDR MEMBERS!

FYI, the rebuild kit is only the contacts and plunger stuff. It will last a few more years on you but you'll need a full rebuild eventually. I did the 35. 00 kit a few years back and then last month I had the starter rebuilt for 110. Truck turns over much faster now.

I blew a few starter relay fuses. I thinking of tryings hd contacts in spring? Working OK with oversized fuse (+5A). What milage are on your trucks? Just to get a idea for starter life.

Is that one of our Dodge Dealers in Albuquerque? $800 sounds a bit high. Melloy quoted me $668, minus my 10% discount, which would be $601.



You're on the right tract however, I too would have gone with the kit.

Because the 'book' says it will take x hours, you also need to pay the 'service' advisor costs, the overhead fee, the owners vacation fund fee, the 'service manager' fee, the Union dues for the shareholder owners, etc.....

To answer the mileage question, I have over 190,000. To answer the $teal question... In the past it had become commonplace to call dealers by a certain nickname, take dealer and replace the "d" with "st" and end up with $tea1er. Since this is a family site and many dealers and I assume Chrysler personnel took offense to this, that term was removed from the allowed list.

Grizzley, I've transferred to Luke AFB in Phoenix from Kirtland in ABQ. The Dealer here was Chapman Dodge. I'm not much of a home mechanic, I'm an Air Force dentist! But I don't mind getting my hands dirty, I just clean them well before going to work! My older truck is a 98. 5 with 175K miles. I hate dealerships. They think we are stupid.

I agree, dealers think they have us over a barrel. $1200 is just ridicules to pay for a new starter. Glad you could do it yourself. I do everything myself that I can.

You can usually get a new starter at an Auto Electric shop for less.



You can reach the top bolt with a 9" extension(12 point 10mm socket). I use the box side of a 10mm combination wrench to do final tightening of the top bolt.



I have replaced the battery side starter solenoid contact twice had minor work on it once and at 227,000 starter is still going strong.

Larry B (foster Truck)has helped me several times with a starter rebuild kit also he sells a new DENSO (stock) starter with the big contacts and your starter problems will go away. The Staff is great also they even overnighted me a new starter so I could leave on a trip the next day he also has a kit which by passes all the wiring and go's directly to the battery and it works great and No "Clicking"
