7hp horizontal 1970s era on mower has been great for years now 1/2 way thru lawn it only will stay runnin with the choke on 1/2 way.

things i did so far

fresh gas,clean air filt,gettin fuel,clean and set plug

Any ideas

There's your biggest clue right there - it's starving for fuel and you're artificially making it rich with the choke.



Take the main jet out and have a very careful look at it. Chances are, you'll find one of the ports with crud in it. You may have to use a very small diameter wire to clean it out.

Does the high speed screw go thru the nut into the bottom of the float bowl? If so the main jet may be unscrewing itself. If so, pull the bowl, smallish screwdriver to tighten the jet, and away you go!

If it doesn't, check for dirty or plugged jets like Matt said!

You guys were right it was gunk in the main jet.

You never want gunk in your main jet:-laf:-laf:-laf



You might also want to check the tank to make sure it is clean and this does not happen again.
