I was about to merge onto I-20 this evening, and this fellow in a Passat or Jetta (not sure which... diesel, I think) accelerates to the stop sign at my left so that he can get right of way.



Heheheh. Did I mention that today was not a good day? My $35,000 truck became infested with black ants today... they crawled up a long weed that was touching the truck and are just ALL OVER the place. My purpose in driving the truck to begin with was to get the rest of the ants off/out from under the hood. I think I was moderately successful in that task. Not happy about having ants, though. The exterminator will be visiting us this week. Not sure what to do about the truck.



So... back to the story... I trail him up the on ramp, noting some black smoke out of his tailpipe as I give the Dodge a little juice to keep up. Didn't take the time to look at the car closely to see if it was a diesel, but assume this to be the case.



Gave the 'ol Ram all it had through 3rd-6th gear and just cleaned the guy's clock. He was trying--he was blowing smoke.



I'll not disclose our top speed--it was fast enough.



Are Jetta or Passat diesels this weak, or was something wrong with this guy's car?



I was a bit disappointed--for his sake. Oo. Oo.



I can now see why power adders for these trucks are catching on. That was fun!!

I saw a few in Redding that were pretty quick, relatively speaking. I think stock they run 20's in the quarter, and 15's modded. I could be wrong about the stock numbers.

Remember the Jetta is getting twice the MPG that your are... 40+

They are built for economy and are not the fastest vehicles on the road but can hold their own against most of the other 4 bangers out there. Remember it's only a little 1. 9 liter motor that makes 90HP stock.



I have left both of mine stock and they perform just fine up the mountains with the AC on at 80 MPH all day long.



The fastest TDI VW I have seen did 14's in the 1/4 and that was a pretty quick little Golf driven by Kerma(a TDR member).

After driving one a week ago I believe every bit of the 20 second 1/4 mile!!!



It was an 06 TDI Jetta with the 6spd auto 105hp VG turbo I asked the salesmen what kind of fuel system it had, he replied "oh, its turbo diesel injection" . Wanted to try the 5spd standard, but they didn't have one ready to be driven.



All in all, a fun quiet little car. My only concern is their reputation of falling apart.

I don't know about the black ants in your truck but the red ants that get in all the sidewalk cracks and ant hills around the yard we mix up Pinesol and water half and half in a spray bottle and soak them down. There is dead ants in a few minutes and if you keep after them for a few days they disappear for a long time.

Thank you, Slow Six. I'll give the Pine Sol trick a try if the exterminator can't make it soon. Enough of these ants!!!
