Need help with my Tekonsha Voyager brake controller. It engages the trailer brakes at full power regardless of the adjsutment. The light does not change colors but blinks red whenever I push the brakes. Any ideas?

I had a Voyager, it was awful. If you can't get yours fixed consider this one:

Tekonsha Prodigy

I have installed many of those for customers and all have been very happy.



I use a Jordan but if it broke I wouldn't hesitate on the Prodigy.

Tekonsha website lists the following two probable causes for a blinking red light:



1-Open on ground line (White wire)

2-Short on brake line (Blue wire)



Was it working previously?
 
I've never been able to adjust it. It came on the truck (bought it used) so I don't know if it did before hand. Since it does apply braking power it doesn't seem to me like it'd be a problem in the connection. When i pull the manual brake slide, it doesn't do anyhthing. Everytime i've called Tekonsha they've been closed.

The best thing I can think of to do with a Tekonsha Voyager is to carefully remove it from your truck and gently place it in the nearest dumpster. Tekonsha is a good company but the Voyager is a terrible product. I owned two or three of them back in the '90s. I tried unsuccessfully to use them on a '94 Ford F250HD to pull a 34' triple axle Airstream weighing about 9,000#. The controller was simply useless. Actually, it was worse than useless because it also created significant frustration and danger. I don't know how many times I ran through red traffic lights with my brake pedal floored. The pendulum design requires the tow vehicle to generate negative acceleration to swing the pendulum to initiate trailer braking. The Ford, although new at the time and in good shape simply was not capable of generating enough consistent braking against a 9,000 # load to provide safe braking. The Voyager required constant adjustment and was not capable of handling braking over bumps, downhill, or uphill because of the pendulum design. If the pavement was wet or otherwise slippery it was possible to lock the front truck brakes, begin skidding, and still provide little or no trailer braking. Tekonsha told me several mods to make including a separate high current ground wire back to the negative battery post and gave me one or two free replacements. None of their kind attempts improved the situation.



A Tekonsha Voyager is junk!
