LCDs aren't as reflective as Plasmas

We ended up buying the Vizio 47 inch LCD 1080p from Costco. I think the current Costco price is $1499 right now. I thought the picture was great and couldn't see any difference between the high end SONY Bravia 46 inch LCD which was significantly more.

We decided on the LCD format because the plasmas have very reflective screen, ( versus the one on the LCDs), since our TV room has many windows. If you have a dark room the plasmas are a great value. Be sure to go to the stores and compare a plasma to a LCD and notice how the in store lights reflect off the screens as this may be a decision maker for many folks.

Let me also mention that not all TV programming is HD. The Atlanta area stations usually only do the news and prime time in HD. We only subscribed to the HD starter package with Comcast to begin with, which was about $15. 00 more than the package we had. I was originally disappointed with the amount of HD that was broadcast but my wife enjoys the prime time stuff and I really like the definition when watching football games.

Just my 2 cents.

I've enjoyed this thread. I was thinking about an Olevia but after reading this, going to really consider a Vizio. In opinions about which one is better?:-laf

I feel that TV robs family time and family relationships are more important than watching TV. The furniture is pointed at each other.

Thats awesome Joel! As a kid I remember having 2 channels to choose from and when I turned 12 I was responsible for getting up at 4 am to help with farm chores and then after school I was outside with chores til after 7 pm and by the time I got a shower in and did homework I had no time for TV. I maybe watched 25 hours of TV between the age of 12 and 18 when I left the farm for college. When I was done with college and on my own I never owned a TV until I moved my wife in at age 28. She lived for watching TV and considered it time for "us" but I HATED it! You might just as well be on another planet if the person you are trying to spend time with is watching TV! With my wife came children and now I have 3 TV's in the house, a 52 inch Sony Plasma, a 32 inch Sony Flat, and a 25 inch Sony standard for their enjoyment because all the kids do is fight over what they want to watch. I only watch about 5 hours of TV a month myself and Ive really considered jerking the plug on them all but with kids now I dont think I can keep my sanity if I did. As they get older and the youngest start school I will wean them as much as possible from the TV to get them more active with better activities.

Im the same as Hammersley though. I dont see a difference in TV's when you stand back at stores and look at the choices. I think the movies all play the same and look the same except for the price tags. I bought all Sony for the warranty and name.

thread..... What about Vizio... ..... 60 some replys, good /bad /ugly

I ve been told that Lcd works better at sea level up to 3000' and plasma works best from 3000' to 5000'. Is this a bunch garbage to is it somwhat ligit. I could kind of see atmospheric pressure affecting liquid crystal displays but with modern technoligy I would think they would be way ahead of somthing like this. Urban Legend or true?

Tried to go to that website but I don't think I'm getting the same one you saw. Are you sure the web address is correct?

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks! I read the entire 7 pages. Reminds me of a transmission or oil thread around here:-{}. Looks like from what most are saying they are junk. Some say if you get a Vizio and calibrate it you'll have a decent pic for a good price. I think those that don't like them have not actuallly tried calibrating them.

The rest of the forum looks like it has some good reading as well, I'll bookmark this one for later reference.

Edit: I just found out the wife just bought 2 LCD's for the bedrooms. 20 & 19" at sears for $350~ish each.

How about not get one at all. I don't own a TV or watch any.

Haven't had a television in 27 years. Only had one a brief time before that. I agree with Joel in that it is too much time taken away from God, family, and more important activities. I read a lot and had plenty of time for the kids and read a lot to the kids when they were pups. Can't really say I've missed anything important.
