Telling injector years apart?

Is there a quick and dirty way to tell injector years apart by looking at them? What would be the result of running 4.5+ injectors in a 2003 engine? I ask in reference to the unknown head dropped on my 2003 engine and possible unknown injectors as part of that mess.

The deep spray have 5 holes, the re-entrant types 7 IIRC. Deep spray injectors in a re-entrant bowl are noticeably smokier and hotter on the EGT's.

Never mix injectors from the wrong model year. The bowl shape of the piston may be different and swapping in a set of injectors from another year may result in bad things happening.

Any visual way to tell what year by just looking at the injector? Want to make sure I have the proper injectors in my engine as it's an unknown at this point.

Like I said, number of holes in the tip is the most reliable. The injector bodies are the same between years so any number might not reflect the nozzle design. A good magnifying glass should allow you to count holes in the nozzle.

Good eyesight also, I didn't need a glass to see those tiny little holes.

The piston bowl shape IS different from the 305 to the 325 engines.
