When pulling my 5th wheel my engine temp goes up several marks on the temp gage. Is anywhere in the mid section of the factory temp gage acceptable for safe temp?Mine sometimes rides near the last mark in the center section of the gage when pulling and is normally before the second mark when not pulling. Also, my pyro gage reads as high as 850-900 when pulling a large hill and is mounted after the turbo. What is limit on pyro temp when mounted after turbo?

Read your manual it states that as long as the guage is below the H that it is "within normal limits" what that is I don't know, as long as it is not boiling over. I was told the temp for post turbo egt is 950. Drive all day long at 900! How heavy of a trailer and how does the truck pull it?

rdodd- I'd move the pyrometer pre turbo. I had it post turbo in my pickup for about a week. Neve hit 900deg, 1" behind the turbo flange. Moved it pre turbo, and hit 1300 in short order, with less boost than when I had hit 875-900. Dont know how hot it would have gotten, had I not chickened out. So, 900 is the MAX I'd go, maybe 850 for long pulls. Get a transmission temp gauge; 20hp penalty for not having one, though it is good you have the others. ;) :D. What kind of peak boost are you seeing?

As for your water temp, I think you are a little high at the 4th mark. Granted, the manual may say anywhere in the center is safe, but they also have the OD out temp switch set to something like 270; too darn hot. I have run as high as the 3rd mark, but back out of it when I go over that. When was the last radiator/ cooling system flush? And I'm not talking about the rip off at Jiffy Lube (though rip off and Jiffy Lube is redundant  ). I'm talking take the rad out, have it rodded out, cleaned up, engine back flushed, etc, etc. Get all the silicates and other deposites out of there, and basically start over new again. Also check your thermostat. They normally go the opposite way, but I guess could be sticking shut too long.

Just got back from a long trip with the cabover on the truck (7900 lbs total between truck and camper). My temp gauge never got more than halfway, and that was pulling some looong hills at 65-70 MPH, with outside temps in the 90's. EGTs were creeping up to just under 1200* at times (pre-turbo).

I'd suggest first checking to see if the factory temp gauge is reading accurately. You can pick up an inexpensive mechanical water temp gauge that actually shows the temp instead of just a bunch of hash marks. Install it temporarily and compare the readings with the factory gauge. That way you'll know if the temps are within spec or not, and give you an idea where to go next if there is a problem.
