Temp reading below -40

I have a 04. 5 SLT with the overhead console. Not the fancy one with the garage door opener. Anyways it has been cold here, but -40 has been as cold as I have seen. I have been watching it like a hawk for it to go to -41, but no luck. Stays at -40 for hours, and usualy there is a bit more of a temp variation with changes in elevation. Just wondering. My infrared temp gun is no help, I poked my arm out the window while driving and it maxed out at -40. Owners manual did not give a temp range.

That is the max mine goes as well. I know we were pushing the -50 around town here, and mine was holding at -40. My bosses durmax is the same way. I guess they didn't plan on us crazy people in these cold climates! lol

That stinks. Would be nice to know the actual temp. Oh well when it hits -40 a few more degrees aint going to make much of a difference. It is just cold!

It's been -58 F here at Clear, Alaska the last couple days. New truck shows

-40F. Old truck shows OC when its below -40 F. Both my trucks run great in the cold. Just plug them in and watch where you buy your fuel and make sure you get # 1.

I think I would freak if it was that cold. It was 75 here yesterday (unusually warm for January) and I loved it.

Only 19 today.

I've seen -25* before, but that was when I still lived in Iowa. Was a whopping 7* here today. Was -4* this morning.

What are you guys using for additive? Straight #1? Keep that crap up north. It would freeze the spuds in the cellar! Doc

We are having a heat wave here in Fairbanks now, it's up to -8!!



Yes I use pretty much straight #1(in fact it is really the only thing you can buy in town about 5 months out of the year). I try to use stanadyne every tank, but been slacking lately so its about every other tank. Power service is a big hit around town as well.



I talked to my folks in Western Montana and they said it was -20, so it might be headed your way doc! Better put sweeters on them taters!

Do any of you guys have manual transmission's

in those temps? I remember when it got to -40 with a manual - Military Land Rovers - that you couldn't shift them until you had them running for at least an hour. If you left them in gear - you were SOL - as the clutch wouldn't disengage..... we use to keep charcoal burners under them - only burned a couple up... ... .

hammersley, you're mention of shifting Land Rovers reminds me of a story,... of course.



When I was going to school in Missoula back in the early ninties we had an headline artic front notoriously known as the "Siberian Express" sweep down. I had a Land Rover with a chevy four banger and a sweet Warn overdrive (great little rig). I headed for UofM at six in the morning with the wind howling and temps way below zero. About half way there the clutch stopped working so I jammed it into gear and just keep moving through stops signs and red lights until I got there - of course UofM was closed due to the storm :-laf . Fortunately, the coffee shop, Cooper Commons, was still open with a few of us early morning regulars seeking respite.



After a couple hours I trudge the two miles home. Turns out the hydraulic clutch rubber parts refused to function and I had lost fluid. Unfortunately, I had chipped a gear by jamming it in and had a hitch in my git'along in first and reverse. Eventually bought a parts rig and replaced the box.

My limits at -40 C. A co-worker parked at the same time I did and her older Chrysler 300 was reading -45 C. Maintenance van with a dial thermometer on the mirror was also well past -40 C which was where the scale stopped.

We just went through some -30 degree temps. and I figured this was bad. North Central Montana isn't to bad compared to colder. We get wind chiles that are bad but -40 with wind must be terrible. Have a great day.

Just came back from a rescue swap for a burnt Hemi that took 16 hrs round trip through the night and next am. We took up another 04 Hemi for the swap and the chaser vehicle was a 03' Montana van with a v-6. Both of these vehicles were pegged @ -40 all night long till mid morning. Even Gm thinks that -40 is a cold as it gets.

It was priceless to see that GAS-HOG Hemi burn less fuel every stop along the way. The first stop it was only 1$ less but the next three were over $15 each fill. It was a good thing that the Hemi was breaking trail.
