Temp sender in NV4500, Put it Where??

Where can I put the temp sender in my NV4500? after a quick look it appears that the fill plug is the only place available. Has anyone else installed a senter in their 4500? Where did you put it??

I bought a 3/4" NPT hollow, hex-head brass pipe plug at Home Depot or an auto parts store, I forgot where. Tap it 1/8 NPT and the tip of the temp sensor will come out approximately flush with the inside of the plug. Use it for the fill plug with a bit of permatex on it.

What is the benefit of watching that temp? Is there a history of overheating or what?

Not that I know of. I just like to know whats going on. I have a transmission temp gauge left over from my automatic and decided to put senders in both the transmission and rear dif. with a selector switch to choose.

You know you can't have too much power or too many gauges. #ad

When I changed the trans fluid at 40K (pulled the PTO plate) I drilled and tapped the plate to except the standard sensor. I used the drivers side plate. I have moniter though the life of the first transmission 150K and now the second (mounted old PTO plate on new trans).

I see temps from 50 degrees (running in -20) to 190 pulling WOT in 90 degree temps. Never went over 200 yet in 180K miles.

In my opinion it would just be another cool gauge to look at.

Through several 5th gear nut looses I seen nothing on the gauge to indicate any problems.

The only interesting thing I noticed is the last 5th gear lose, I had been pulling for 600 miles running about 160 -170 degrees. Had to run in 4th (lost fifth) for remaining 100 miles. Temps dropped to about 100 degrees. I actually stopped to see if I had lost fluid. Trans runs much cooler in 4th.
