CAR Winter Starting TIP ????????

Buying Bonds 4 My Son ................

Was thinking of buying a foam mattress but they ain't cheap. About $1,200 for a King size. Thought I would ask if any here had one and how satisfied you are with it. thanks for the replies.

I don't think any quality mattress will be cheap. We had to buy a new mattress & box spring set last Saturday after our soft-sided waterbed sprang a leak during the night. Ended up at the local Verlo store (www.verlo.com), and bought the best quality 2-sided king-sized mattress they had for $2,200. It was worth the $$ as it is well made with a 15-year warranty, and I'm now sleeping better than I ever did on the waterbed.

Check out www.epinions.com for other mattress reviews.

I've heard that the foam mattresses can be quite warm to sleep on. No experience myself. We have a Sterns and Foster that cost over $2000. Been happy with it. The air chamber beds (Select Comfort) are another option.

Everyone is different and all you can do is go out and try as many as you can. Try to find ones that have a trial period so you can return it if you don't like it. That being said, I have a Select Comfort and I don't like it anymore. Mine is old and doesn't hold air very well. I have to pump it back up once a month or so and mine doesn't have the digital gauge to tell me how much air is in there. I have to guess. I have been wanting to try a TempurPedic and I did this past weekend at a home show. I really like the feel and think that I will buy one of those next.

I slept on one of them high dollar foam matresses. I think it is a waste of money to buy them as it was, well, all I can say was "strange" feeling. It was also too hot!! Thing retains body heat!

We have a big king size thick top dollor matresses like others have said they have and it is the best money I ever spent.

Just my two bits

We have the 10" thick Tempur-pedic mattress. We have had it about 9-10 months, and we went it from a full motion water bed,and I can tell you it was the best purchase ever. It is a bit cold when you first get into it at night, but it warms up really quick, and feels like you are sleeping on a cloud. I would suggest going to a bedding place and lay on the tempur-pedic mattress, you will like it. I highly recommend it. It is a bit pricey, but worth it.

I have a Select Comfort. Really like it, so does my back. :D Had a waterbed or 2. Back didn't like the full motion matrees. The ones that had the stuffing in them weren't too bad. Nice to have in a cold room, though. Help to keep the feet warm. :D

Oh yeah I forgot to mention I have a friend that is a tempur-pedic salesman, and he asked me to try this at home. He said take a golf ball and put in on the mattress, and then lay on it. I could not believe it,but I could not feel the ball digging into my back one bit. Now if that doesn't convince you nothing will.

Take a golf ball shopping with you,and check it out yourself. These mattresses are great.

A couple of guys at work were talking about this same topic recently. One of them bought one of the mattresses (I don't know which brand, but the 'memory foam' type, like the Tempurpedic) and he and his wife love it. Another guy bought a foam pad that is the same type of foam, but it's a pad that you put on top of your existing mattress. He really likes it and says you get the same comfort as the expensive mattress, but it's a whole lot cheaper. Of course, that's just his opinion, I'm sure you'll hear all kinds of positive and negative opinions. I brought this up just to mention the possibility of the pad at the lower price as another option.

WE have had a Tempurpedic Mattress for 3 years. At first it was a little weird, but I noticed I wasn't waking up at night anymore, also felt alot better in the lower back after about a month. It is a frigid ice block if you keep your bedroom cool like we do, it doesn't take long to heat up though, as it does, you sink down in it. I like the tempurpedic pillows more than the bed to be honest, they are great for neck pain, and around $100 verses the $1300 we paid for the mattress.

Two things I don't like about it, a heated mattress pad or electric blanket will soften the foam and makes it feel like mushy when you get in at first. It isn't a permanent thing, just when the heated pads are turned on. Also it is about the most similar feeling of dragging a dead body around if you have to move it ever. I have never had a more cumbersome and heavy mattress.

For a long term report on ours, I would have to say we were happy wiht it for the first 1 1/2 years. After that, it began to not conform as well anymore and has gotten too soft for me to lie on at times. We have put in a complaint to the bed store we bought it from and Tempurpedic as well. Tempurpedic sent us a letter that told us to take pictures of any sunken regions of the foam and to lay the mattress on a solid hard floor with no bed base under it, then photograph the bare matress with a straight edge on it to show if it is defective. Up until this, we were happy with it. Now I am wondering if it was worth the money, the replacement procedure has been a real headache to say the least. We still have not heard from the store or Tempurpedic in 2 months as to what they're planning to do for us.

I have laid on brand new ones at the bed stores and it is completely different than ours in firmness and contour, which really bothers me after such a short time with ours. I expected it to be several years before seeing fatigue in the mattress. Ours is a queen size.

Whoo boy, try getting one of those things to the second floor. I almost gave my self a hernia...

Anyway, I like the Tempurpedic. It works pretty decent. My girlfriend likes it too, but she complains because she isn't heavy enough to break her side in. She tries to sleep as close to me as possible to get the soft side of the bed. :) I don't think it really keeps me from tossing and turning, I'm like a dog that has to circle a couple of times before I get comfy.

We considered a Tempur-pedic but went with the Select Comfort instead.

The memory foam can be VERY hot at night, and we don't have A/C in our house. The Select Comfort has a 25 year warranty, which is about the best bed warranty we found.

There's also evidence that memory foam can "wear out" in the sense that it loses its elasticity.

I DO have the Tempur-pedic (TP?) pillows and they are great. Between them and the SC bed, I sleep better than I ever thought I could. I don't need coffee to wake up anymore.

BTW-- don't buy the TP pillows at a retail place- they will rip you off (like $100 each!!!). I paid $14 for each of my TP pillows at a small surplus place in Arkansas. I stocked up and bought seven. I kept a few, sold some, and gave away others. I earned lots of brownie points when they got a gift they thought I paid so much for:)

I picked up a few from a Seen on TV store in the mall a year ago. There was a slight difference in them, but for under $20, I will enjoy them regardless.

My wife says she feels a definite difference in the "china pillow" from our actual Tempurpedic we bought with the mattress. I put them in our RV and my toterhome, seems fine to me.

Guy at work bought the tempurpedic a couple of months ago & loves it. I shyed away from buying one because I didn't like the feel when I stayed at a friends that had one.

I've bought alot of beds over the years due to a bad back. The Select comfort was the best for awhile. But I hated the way the fitted sheet kept poping off. Also didn't like the foam down the middle seperating the individual air chambers. I still have it but it's in our 5vr. Now we are sleeping on a $60. 00 coleman air mattress, 2yrs & still like it, no back aches.

And I thought I slept better camping due to the outdoors feeling. I'll have to drag out my air mattress and try it for a few days. We're most likely going to be be without a mattress when Tempurpedic takes ours for warranty approval.

Thats why we bought the Select comfort years ago. Every time we were on a trip on the motorcycle we slept on an air mattress. I slept better & no back pains. I wasn't sure if it was the air mattress or 300 to 500 miles a day we were putting on the bike. :-laf

If they would just come out with a better way to keep that fitted sheet on other than garter straps I would probably buy another one for the house. I think I'd go for a king so if you roll over your not feeling the foam strip in the middle.

I have a bad back, also. My wife and I purchased a Select Comfort, and love it. We bought a set of sheets from Select Comfort when we bought the bed, too. The have an elastic band that goes below the mattress on each corner--the top sheet never comes off. Our other set of sheets for this bed are 'deep pocket', and they don't come off, either. I never thought I would say this, but "25 is my sleep number"--really! I used to watch those commercials and think 'whatever', but I'll tell ya--I have slept better on this bed than I have slept in years... literally.

Anyway, to each his own..... that's why they make a lot of different beds!! Oo.

**Just a personal side-note** No matter how many posts I type, my post count is always zero... Guess I am cursed to being a newbie, always. . ?? :(

just an FYI. . Costco has a cupon on the Novaform mattress topper the week of 1/24 thru 1/30 -$30. 00 for those interested

I bought a topper and have not installed it yet. . with all my bone/joint "issues" I do not sleep well, lucky to get 3 or 4 hrs a night and those are 15 or 20 min. at a time... hope this helps. . I'll post back after a week or two on it

FYI- -the new SC beds have a different design so that you don't feel that foam divider down the middle anymore. On our bed, it's completely undetectable.

As for the sheets-- try some deep pocket sheets from a place like Bed Bath and Beyond.
