Off Roading Discovering the limits of one's truck the [H]ard way

Hey guys. There is a test and tune at the Palmer drag track on the 21st (wens). At the last TT there were 9 trucks and a Powerstroke was the quickest with a 14. 5! We are also working with the head man at the track, and he said if there was enough interest he would start a class for us! It's great fun! $25 fee, and a helmet required! I need some help with these Ford boys!

I plan on being there. I'm interested in seeing how much of a difference a L/U switch will make so I'll make a few passes on different settings. I've being practicing on my launches in 2wd with not so good results... ... spin, spin, spin. I'm kind of apprehensive of a 4wd launch because I don't have the billet output, just the input and can't really swing any more parts right now.

sweet!! I was trying 2wd drive last time, with not much luck! I started doing 4wd and it was much better! It should be good fun!! We'll see you out there!

Hi guys,

I'm up here in Alaska for my summer vacation as usual. Just drove through Palmer today taking my daughter to airport... would love to head back up there for the event, but not sure. My truck is down about 5psi boost after my trip from Illinois pulling 15K, so am working on finding the culprit... hope it's not the VP44.

Anyway, I launch in 4wd, and have broken the stock output shaft somewhere between 20-30 psi boost. Also have broken the input shaft, which is now billet! Of course, boost numbers may mean different "torque on shaft" numbers for different trucks. I was making about 40 psi max, but only 35 now.

Even if conservative with launch boost, 4wd is the way to go! You can kick it out under full power right away after launch.

Does Palmer have a regular drag strip?

I am going to do my best to make it. With the new baby in the house you never know what is going to happen. I think if I do make it I will launch in 4x4 with 5-7 psi and hammer it after that.

My question is should I keep the overdrive on or off??

the best part about the test and tune, is you can make several runs. I BS'd a bunch and still got in about 10 runs. You'll have a chance to try all sorts of things!

They track in Palmer is pretty nice. it's on the old highway. See ya out there!

I tried a 4wd launch this evening and you can definatley tell a differance. After the boost started to build it climbed to 15psi pretty quick which kinda surprised me  so I let off the brake and 3/4 throttled it out. I think it's going to be hard to watch the lights and the boost gauge at the same time but, I guess that's why they call it 'Test and Tune' night. Any pros out there have any staging hints?

Alaskax, we'd love to see you there. I'm going to arrive in my new baby . No power mods yet, but I may try it out to set up a nice "baseline" to work with.

To say the least, I'm very impressed with the performance so far. We definately need a CTD to whoooop up on those PSD guys.

Listen to me Shane... . It's only been 2 weeks and I'm already talking smack. Wasn't long ago that I was Mr. 305. 8 :--) with a Powerstroke.

Well guys its tuesday and its looking good for me making it out. Today I am goning to pull my neg battery cables for a couple of hours and maybe change my oil.

If there are a bunch of us leaving from Eagle River, maybe we should drive out together. Shoot me a PM and we can figure out where to meet.

Okay Alaskans, we are going to the strip. Anyone coming from Anchorage or Eagle River, meet in the Fred Meyer parking lot in Eagle River at 5:00. We will leave the lot at 5:15 so we can get to the Tech inspection in time. I will bring an extra helmet if any one needs one.

Your to funny wayne!! This should be a good turn out!! Arn't you glad you switched to the A-team! If we can't out run them we'l out number them!! :D See ya out there!!!

OK, I did a little work to my truck, and it's running like it's supposed to again, so I'm planning on coming... it's only 200 miles! Will be good to meet you guys.

JR2,

I would say definitely do not disable OD. You don't say what rear end you have, but I have 3. 54's, and even with that, speed is limited to about 80 mph in direct... and you will need something closer to 100 mph in the 1/4!

John

Hey guys I should be there. I am bringing my video camera so hopefully I can get us some good video. See you all tonight.

WOW what a great turn out!! I beleieve there was about 15 trucks running times and several others there to watch! It looked like a cummins convention.

I apologize for the Ford boys not showing up. It looks like they are as reliable as the trucks they drive. According to my source, one was having transmission problems, and the other was having some seriouse EGT issues! I haven't talked to them YET, but I will make sure and rub it in.

If you guys are interested we'll see if we can get an official race going.

Thanks again, I had a great time!!

Woo woo I ran a 13. 957 @ 97. 57 Not bad for my first time at the track and launching with only 2-5 psi.

I have to say that was the most fun I have had with my truck in some time and it was good to see the number of guys out there running. Had a blast and can not wait to do it again next year.

I did talk to the track manager and he said there will be a couple of all truck nights next year, should be fun.

You got me by a nose John! My last and best run of the night was a 13. 981 @ 94. 89. Now if I can only get it to shift into O/D without letting up on the gas I should do a little better. Launched in 4wd @ 10 psi all but my first two runs.
