Competition New To Diesel Drag Racing - Tips Please

Joe Hellman went 10. 97 @ 130 Sunday at the Clash of The Titans race at San Antonio Texas. He was runner up in the 11. 0 True Street Class. He ran a loseing 11. 12, lifting to try to keep from breaking out.

Came back Sunday with a 10. 97 @ 130. 1. He runs a small shot of N20 (100 ???) to keep things cool. The engine he is running now was pulled from a wrecked truck he bought in Houston, with the factory 180HP pump, and 85,000 miles. He runs a set of Prince Performance Twins and Injectors and a Suncoast Full Tilt transmission. He has a self built 4-link underneath with 3. 54 gears. He has also shortened the chassis by 17 or 19 inches.

Not bad for and old pipeline welder.

That is great, seems like Suncoast is the transmission to have if you wanna go fast.

Starting to think so too... Seems like there is a pattern on here lately with Suncoast-equipped trucks... Hate to say it for the fear of getting flamed, and also being off topic, but i'd like to hear some success stories with some of the other brands of auto transmissions. A Suncoast trans is getting more appealing every day now. ;)

Right on!!!!

Ya gotta love that time

I was doing backflips from a 11. 91 run

That is saying something for a guy my size!!!

Suncoast, Some trucks have all the fun :D

What does that thing weigh? That's darn impressive with a 180hp pump... OEM block/head/valvetrain, etc...

Matt

Yea Matt, the block, and valvetrain are stock as far as I know. The head has been "O" ringed and cleaned up, nothing radical.

I believe his truck weights around 6000 give or take a thousand. He has installed race seats, and removed the rear bench. The bumpers are all stock as far as I know (I haven't seen the truck lately). He did all of his own welding for his cage and supports to pass tech at the differant tracks in his area. I know if he comes to Houston and lays down a sub 11. 0 run they will be on him like white on rice checking things out. The shortening of the chassis and the 4-link sure don't hurt things either.

He drives it on the street regularly, to cruise nights and such. If you are ever in the Corpus Christi Texas area look for him.

Jim

I didn't post about the Suncoast transmission to take a swipe at the other transmission builders. Suncoast is just what Joe chose to run. The Houston Texas area has one great DTT builder in Chris Strickland (Strick9) now. Back when Joe started, Suncoast was the closest performance builder in the south. I personally would feel comfortable with any of the big 3 or 4 (DTT, ATS, Suncoast, Goerend (sp)). All have their subtle differances (please don't ask me to list them, I truly am the last person you want trying to explain transmission operations to anyone  ).

Jim

Very cool. Anything running a 10 or 11-second 1/4 mile is impressive... and this guy is going about it with a minimalist approach - which I've always been a fan of.

Matt

I think it is partly suncoast and partly because God has chosen the Southern Trucks to DOMINATE the USA. I think from now on only southern trucks will be in the money at the races and all others will just have to watch :D

Thanks Merrick, me and my computer aren't smart enough to get things over here from other sites.

One day I'm gonna have to have a talk with my computer about staying up to date with technology... ... .....

Jim

Jim,

Just be carefull. My computer stays up to date. Any new virus that's out there, it promptly catches and installs it on itself.

Be sure if you find a magic lamp you specify exactly how "up to date" you wish to be... .

Matt,

That smoke sure cleans up really well. I'd say Cut DV's, BIG injectors, and the twins help him alot.

Merrick

Come on Merrick - our buddy Joe (to this day... ) claims that cut DV's add 0. 0hp.

So, it can't be the DV's... :-laf

If he's doing it with 'big' DV's and injectors... that's still pretty impressive.

If I were a GM/F*rd guy... I'd want: dyno sheets, VIN #'s, certified/sober witnesses, and a letter from the Attorney General stating that this is in fact what he's running.

Matt

Just learned that Jeff went into the 10's this weekend for the first time. Congrats to Jeff and Joe!!

That's 2 Texas trucks in the 10's!!! :D
