I just finished watching a news report that moved me and made me remember a behind the scenes event that barely made the news as we were under attack.



I didn't know if it was said, if it was great - I'll just say it again, if not, as a New Yorker and American, I'll say it...



Thank you Canada.



With out a whimper or 2nd thought, they took ALL of our non-domestic flights! There was plenty of Americans on those planes.



Canada and the US had no idea who or what else was on those planes.



They stepped up to the job, they did it and never complained.

They provided the security and do process required at the time and called for based on the events unfolding.



By all reports I've heard, the fine folks and hotels in Canada opened up their arms and doors and took good care of their unexpected guests - when we (USA) closed our country shut and wouldn't let them in, which I believe was the right thing todo.



Canada could have very easily said that they weren't prepared... or it's not their problem, or what ever... but like the heroes at ground zero that don't ask - just do, Canada stepped up and just did.

Canada ACTED when we needed them in one of our darkest hour of 9-11-01.

That let us get to the job of securing our nation and handling the problems with in.



They very well could have been taking in a plane or planes loaded with explosives, they very well could have gotten a hi-jacker that couldn't do what he needed to do to a US building since they were diverted and decide to take out the local Mall in a city of Canada. Face it, these terrorists weren't too smart, just machines and anything is better than nothing with them.



While typing this I searched for other posts and found one that asked, "Where are our friends"... ... I read it ..... as grief stricken Americans , all sorts of feelings are going to come out.



This letter is mine.

Ditto: Bob, I too appreciate my northern brothers. I served with the Army, and part of two years I spent serving in Canada. I met some really good people. We like to rib each other like brothers and sisters, but when the chips are down I am happy to see them step forward just as we would be there for them.



I have worked with them, dated there ladys and as far as I am concerned no different than us... Thank you again Canada!

I'm moved by your thoughts guys.



I am born and raised Canadian.



Here in Calgary, local citizens showed up at the airport impromptu, to ask if anyone needed a home to stay at.

Hundreds of stranded travellers wound up staying in families homes right here in the city.



Last I heard, some 240 diverted planes were landed here.



I am confident I speak for all Canadians when I say we mourn for your tragedy. We had a moment of silence at work today for you.



Here in Canada, tommorow, the prime minister has declared a day of mourning.



My biggest fear is that the method or approach of retalliation may cause more harm that it tries to solve. Levelling a country will NOT stop terrorism, it may even provoke it more.



I feel for the innocent families in Afghanistan who have NOTHING to do, nor condone terrorist activities. They will be living in fear that they are not responsible for, just like the people in the WTC.



As I said in another post, if it isn't right to harm innocent people in the WTC, it isn't right to harm innocent people elsewhere.



These are guys who intentionally went down with a plane.

They aren't likely to be "taught a lesson" by using force.



I hope for all of our sake, that ALL countries will work together to nail the terrorists, and not the innocent people.

Thank you Canada, and now we can amend that letter with when and WHO came to our help.....



I'm soo respect Canada and their people for putting themselves in harms way to help, besides the great help they provide for the stranded. I've never had a bad thing to say about them, they've never given me a reason. I've only had good thoughts, now I have GREAT thoughts.



Shawn I appriciate your humanatarian point (and you've made some very good points) and thats what our two great countries are about... we can voice our thoughts.

We're very lucky to have each other as neighbors and brothers.

Some are not so lucky in Europe and the Middle East as to who their neighbors are.



I posted this message as message of great thanks to our neighbors, but with respect to my reasons for posting this message (thanking Canada and the great people there), and all due respect to Canada, I can't reply to your point of retalliation in this thread. I don't want to put any hate in this thread and no one has either, so I will not.



My feelings run very very deep and wide on the issue of retalliation (as well as many other issues) and now I think I have some 20/20 hindsight, in respect to the last 30 years, to quide my own opinions on that issue, but this isnt the thread for it.

I like all Canadians are shocked at what happed . Most business and schools are flying there flags at half mast in repect to the dead and wounded . Our military is on alert and our emergency response teams are at the ready , when they are called upon to assist in any way . Our local radio station played God Bless America at 12 noon today . The Prime Miister asked that all Canadians stopped what they were doing at 12:20 -- and observe a period of silence .

I know that as a people , you get crapped on world wide , and as the other posts have said , you've lent a hand to many a country when they need assistance-- with no strings attached . Whom ever did this does nor know the American resolve and they will dearly pay the conciquences.

Most everyone here is doing everything they can. Blood banks have had to stay open late due to the numbers showing up to donate.



We also have firefighters from Ontario down in New York who are helping with the rescue effort.

There hasn't been an hour I don't have a tear in my eye...

If I don't, the sounds of the Airforce, or Navy overhead brings one.



The patrols are constant and consistant.



They will not let anything happen to the heroes at ground zero.



We've had many road and bridge closings if there is anything in the lest that may be a security risk. They closed off all of Staten Island chasing a suspect. They have sealed off manhatten many times. No chances are being taken.



Pres Bush brought more watery eyes as we listened to his speech being broadcasted live at ground zero.



Finally found more flags about 20 miles east of my house, by the Calverton Vets' cemetery and the old Gruman site, where flight 800 was stored during it's investigation.



The patrols bring back memories, I remember the summers long ago laying out on Smiths Point and listening the the roar of F14's as they left Gruman for testing in Virgina... and the sonic boom when they hit the afterburners to get there in a hurry. Naughty boys those Navy Pilots, we werent supposed to hear the sonic booms. Used to see them test fly them over LI when I was in school and they were 1st designing them. Been years since I heard the sounds of military jets over LI. Not happy for the reasons why I hear them now, but it makes me proud that they are there.

I was thinking the very same thing when I heard they were diverting all inbound East coast air traffic to Canada on the 11th... I told my wife, "what makes them think Canada wants part of our problem?" They could have inadvertently received a terrorist plane or been the target for retaliatory measures by merely helping us.

The bottom line is we did respond because we, like you, know the price of Freedom, Trust, and genuine regard for our friends neighbours, and brothers.

We may differ at times, on one issue or another, but as I noted in my original post some days ago, when things get ugly, you find out who your friends really are.

Governments come and go, some can be courageous, some 'pretty weeny', but the PEOPLE are what really count. Our PEOPLE really give a damn even though it may not be "in your face obvious" all the time.

So, for what its worth, keep a grip, think it out, and KICK some A$$ were it needs kickin.
