Many thanks to this board . I have been Watching for a long time and you helped make the decision to replace my aging 77 W 200, 318 Full time 4x4 with a CTD. It seems strange to lift my right foot going uphill in a higher gear and to NOT stop for fuel everyday. The only thing that seems wrong is it is getting only 16mpg ( old truck got 9 so it is still a great improvement). oming from the 318 I'm not ready to start BOMBING ------Yet. I can see most of the info is here Again THANK YOU

53 Willys,
Seems low for 3. 54 rear.
Could be fuel, timing, or turbo( as in leaks loosed clamps... )
Check first to see if you have fuel leaks especially return fuel line hose. This hose is next to engine behing injector pump and fuel filter.
More to come, I'm sure.

What speeds are you driving? Highway only or mixed highway city?

That's about right for around town or the rural roads found in your area. Might be a tad low for interstate driving.

With the age of your truck, you might check the health of the lift pump (pressure before the filter) and pressure after the filter. Change the filter, if necessary and if the lift pump has good psi (25) and you have low psi after the filter, I would suspect the overflow valve. There is a Bosch TSB on the overflow valve in late 94-early 95. Do a search for overflow valves and read my post to "dowg. " You will also find the update Bosch part # on the post. They are relatively inexpensive about $80-85 from DC or Cummins or your favorite Robert Bosch location.

FWIW, I've changed several lift pumps that were well out of spec and the customer was only down 1-2 mpg, vs. when the truck pump was operating in spec.

Missoui brought up a good point about the fuel return hose, charge air connections, also make sure you have a fresh air filter and maybe timing too.

Finally, source your filtration needs thru Fleetguard and save your pennies for bombing!

I have a customer that routinely sees 20-21 with a 2whl drive auto trans. at 65 on our flat Texas roads.

Good luck
andy
