On my way home from work I noticed a noise coming from the transmission when ever I backed off the gas (5th gear)I'm guessing that nut is about to fall off. Will it damage anything when it does? Is dodge paying for anything? How much for the six speed and is it a direct bolt up? The truck is a 1996 with 65K also if I take the transmission out I will change the clutch while I'm in there any recomendations?

You basically just lose 5th but the metal from the nut's threads goes through the transmission--not ideal. The new Dodge nut helps but the proper fix is Standard Transmission's mainshaft and 5th gear. . 800/ 783-8726. Also check the old posts--there are several threads on 5th gear nut.

I lost 5th in June of this year. Had around 50K miles on my Ram.

I called the DC 800 number for customer service and got the 5th fix for a $50 deductible with DC paying the rest as a "goodwill" repair.

I'd give them a call and see what you can do. I've been surprised that a class action lawsuit hasn't been brought up to force DC to cover 5th gear fixes.

NO!
the 6 spd is &&& isn't a direct bolt up. .
Being you are in this area tells me you are pre 98.
Speedo sensor is in the transmission.
to bolt in the 6 spd you have to remove the bellhousing-replace the shifter lever-add mounting adaptors-replace rearend with speedo pick-up which feeds thru anti-loc brake sys. Last but not least replace the complete wiring harness.
Besides there is a problem with 2nd & 3rd syno's.
You want 5 th gear to stay put use my fix.
want added insurance use std trans new main shaft. If they are not telling you to stake the nut as i have outlined in my post ,shame on them.
With just my fix and oem main shaft if i was doing the repair i would have no problem standing behind a 2 yr /200k warranty against the nut comming lose ... .....
While you are in that area pull the transmission and remove the flywheel and get the bushing from south bend clutch and install it .
Be it also noted if some one tell's you at a d/c shop the problem with the bearing is the fly wheel had the hole drilled off center and you need a new flywheel at a tune of $600+ and you fall for it -SHAME ON YOU.
I now have a flywheel from a owner that got ripped ,his words to me was i wish i'd picked up that bushing.
The bushing is $40 and any machine shop can install it IF they tell you /them the press fit(size of the hole). if not e-mail me.

Kenny61, you won't have to pull out the transmission to repair the 5th gear problem, assuming it is just the common nut problem. The nut/gear is easily accessable through the tailcasing. An easy fix with a 2-wheel drive, but a little more of a challenge with the 4x4's. Mine went over 120,000 miles with no problem. I pull pretty hard regularly and have had no other problems. The clutch should be great at only 65,000 miles. Mine is still original.

Does anyone rent/loan the two wrenches to replace the nut? I have my transmission out now and might as well do the fix and probably won't need them after. Also, tdrmbramr do you have the number for south bend clutch? I might as well do the bearing too.

The splined wrench to hold the mainshaft is different for a 2 wheel drive to a 4 wheel drive.
