My trucks are driven a lot, as shown by the miles on them in my sig. One of the items that wears the worst on the 2nd and 3rd gen trucks is the door hinges. Over the years I have tried different lubricants and have never been satisfied. White lithium spray lube caused a build up which attracted dirt. Not only was it unsightly it also didn't work well. Spray silicone has been the product I stayed with even though it required weekly applications. Recently I found GDL (garage door lube) made by the same folks that make Fabulous Blaster. It is silicone based but dries to a non tacky substance. IT WORKS!!!!! The drivers doors on both 3rd gens were requiring twice a week applications of silicone but after a good soaking with GDL it has now been two weeks and the hinges work without groaning!

So, what have you tried that works?

I have always used white lithium with good results on previous rigs. I have never had a dust problem with it either.

I have yet to have to address my 05's hinges, but they only have 62K on them. I do have some GDL for the GD, and have to apply it every few months to keep the kids rooms from shaking.

hinge lube

It always seemed odd to me that no manufacturer put zerk fittings on door hinges. A quick shot of general purpose grease would last a long time. I had ''security'' type storm doors made for both my house doors because one is 42 inches and the other 48 inches so nothing frome Home Depot, etc. would fit and each door has three zerks that I've only had to grease once in six years.

I use powered dry graphite. It doesnt leave a mess, has good staying power, and easy to apply. Also works great on key locks... It comes in a mineature toothpaste tube. Doesn't seem like theres much in there, but a tube lasts forever.

I totally agree Gerry, grease zerks would be great. But heck, Dodge won't even put them on the ball joints, let alone door hinges!

Godspeed,

Trent

Boy that would be a neat feature wouldn't it! I wonder if they can be added? I'll look next time I drive the truck.

The guy who used to make replacement hinges for the 1st gen put grease zerks in them. I am standing here looking at my hinge as I type this, doesn't look possible to me but what do I know, I am a farmer and truck driver.

Godspeed,

I use the dri-slide lube that I bought for lubing the slide out on my 5th wheel, seems to work fine. It sprays on wet and the carrier evaporates leaving a dry film that doesn't attract dirt.

I was a big believer in silicone lubes until it would not stop the drivers door from snapping when closing. I was about to change out the bushing but was short of time and sprayed it down with Fluid Film. Now over a year later and still works perfect.

Guess I'm old fashioned. Good old 40wt. racing oil. Thick enough to stick around a while.

Maybe a little messy but... . Never had to replace the bushings and pins. Oil them twice a year. Spring and Fall.
