What is lugging?

Dead Truck, need help!!

I went to Arkansas SUN/MON and got the new transmission and TC installed in the PSD at Brian's Truck Shop. The difference is unbelievable. It will now put up with the power the truck is making. The first thing I had to do when I got home today was pit the two trucks listed below against each other. The mods are listed. I made a total of 4 passes in each truck using the same G-TECH. Both trucks were weighed today on a local stone distributors scale. The PSD weighed 8800lbs and the CUMMINS weighed in at 7120lbs. The Dodge had more junk under the flat lid, the PSD is running without the ARE shell at this time.

The Cummins average was a 15. 85 @ 85. 3mph. 0-60 was 7. 78.

The PSD's average was a 15. 71 @ 86. 1 mph. 0-60 was 7. 53.

The Cummins is tracking the PSD down from about 40mph on. The advantage is all in the start. The new transmission just makes the PSD rip out of the hole, especailly with 4. 10's and 4 tires.

My brother and I had a blast. After finishing he drove the PSD and I drove the Cummins. We started from a 50 mph roll with the PSD in drive and the Cummins in 5th. We went up to 100mph. The Cummins was ahead by a truck length and pulling away. The 4. 10 geared PSD is all over at about 105-108. The Cummins ran right up to the engine governor in 6th gear. Speedo was around 115 or a little more.

The highest temps I could get in the PSD was 1250. The Cummins was right at 1200.

The PSD makes 29lbs of boost. The Cummins was making 35-36lbs.

It sure is a blast knowing I am not likely to get outrun no matter which one I climb into. It is really amazing how much power either one of these trucks can make. They are both a blast to drive. They are very different. The PSD's power seems very linear all the way through the RPM range, the Cummins just poors it on from about 1400-2500.

The one thing that really sticks out is the difference that a real sweet auto makes in one of these trucks. The PSD runs like a total different truck. It shifts very firm and right when it needs to... a far cry from what it was doing before. The Cummins is a blast to watch that big plume of smoke burp out at every gear change. I am enjoying "BURPING" on people that are annoying me... BOMB ON... . CJ

Really liked your post CJ... Every since you started posting here you have been right on time with your info or opinion and are never rude. One of these days either I will be driving through Texas or you through North Carolina and we can meet. The coffee or Dew is on me... ... ... ... Pete

Pete... you are "right on" with your assessment. A bunch of us met CJ last Christmas, up here in the NorthWest. It was a very pleasurable afternoon!

Cool thanks for the info!! Good post.

Have you tried the brake toast launch with your cummins yet?? Get about 2K in 3rd gear and hammer down the go pedal and keep the truck slowed down with the brakes until the boost comes up... let of the brake and HANG ON. Hiperf360 used to have a 12V truck that would break the duals loose doing this. It helped alot to keep turbo lag from killing you while comparing your speed with another vehicle. . because street racing is bad ;)

Missouri Mule,

The Cummins is mine as well. I purchased it about 6 weeks ago as a work truck. It replaced a Nissan Frontier I had been beating the crap out of. The rebates were so good I went for it. I owned a 93 in the past and enjoyed everything about it except for the lack of a CrewCab. I will keep the PSD for the 5th wheel towing... not that the Cummins can't handle it but the PSD is a lot more roomy. My brother owns my old 96 PSD with almost 300K miles... still runs strong... . CJ

CJ, great info. Just curious, what kind of turbo does the PSD have as far as make and dimensions? Just now realized you're in Arlington! Do you ever go the the Big D TDR chapter get-togethers in Dallas? I haven't been yet but plan to go to the July 14th one, maybe see you there.

Too bad the Dodge Cummins didn't have an automatic transmission with DTT performance enhancements in it. Having to shift that sixspeed is slower than an auto. I'm sure that would have made a big difference.

Thanks for posting the upgrades on both trucks. I had a customer in the store the other day telling me about riding in a guy's PSD and how fast it was. I know these trucks can be quick (as I witnessed at May Madness) and was listening along until the guy said that his friend told him the PSD would run in the 14's with no upgrades except exhaust and a chip  Afraid he lost me right there.

Kurt,

I have been to the TDR meet a couple of times... . once in the PSD and last month in the new Cummins. It is a good time with a bunch of trucks. I am going to go next month. An auto in the Cummins would make it quicker, but the PSD is hauling around a lot more weight. A lighter truck with the same mods would be close to 14's... . CJ
