I hit 50,000 miles this week and went on a maintenance blitz yesterday. It was an all-out fluids attack. Whatever it was it got flushed, pumped and dumped. Brake fluid, PS fluid, coolant, and the transmission and diff get it next. I even lubed the door hinges, adjusted the brakes, and waxed the tires

Anyway I battled the crummy cheap plastic petcock and got most the antifreeze out, and removed the heater hoses and T-stat housing. I stuck the garden hose in those orfici/orifi/orfices (sp?) and pumped water through to flush good.

I then grabbed the 5-gallon pail, popped the cap on my Cat antifreeze and began to chug the stuff into the container. Wow, that sure is a pretty neon pink color! We’re talking WILD PINK. What’s up with that? I put it in anyway, it is Ethelyne Glycol. It is Caterpillar Diesel Engine 8C-3684 Antifreeze/Coolant. I am going to trust this is OK. I don’t know what people are going to think when they look under my hood and see that pink stuff glowing in the overflow reservoir  LOL

I also changed my T-stat, and I noticed the pn 3937171 doesn’t match the 3935811 & 3954194 24-Valve T-stat part numbers listed in these forums. Hope it’ll do the job. When the engine warms up it goes right to the 190 mark then drops like a bomb to 170, oscillates up and down a little more then settles at 185. That is a 5F drop.

It was an interesting day Sunday.

Vaughn,

Is that a pre-mix? Ballpark costs? Was wondering if it might be a better way to go cost wise over the FG anti-freeze???

coolant

Does that coolant conforn to CC specifications? If it is for a Cat engine, Ill bet it has SCA additive in it.

Coolant color?

I just changed out the premixed fleetguard stuff that was in the truck these last 2 years, it was light blue, and changed to dex cool that carries the GM-6038M/ASTM4985 heavy duty diesel spec. It's neon blast from the past orange!

All I need are my rose colored glasses and a tie dye t shirt.

Shelby Griggs,

I use the John Deere Cool Guard 50/50 premix. Cost is $17. 50 for 2 1/2 gallons. It is an Ethelyne Glycol mix. I figure if it is good enough for a JD tractor, it is definitely good enough for our Cummins (especially since Cummins says we can use almost any coolant).

Shelby, I paid about $8 a gallon for the Cat antifreeze, it is not premixed.

WestTN, I don't know if it has SCA additive, if that is the anticavitation stuff, I think it is in there, but with the ISB it doesn't matter whether or not it has it. What is "CC Specifications" anyway?

Paul, I'd rather have neon orange instead of pink. But I understand the Fleetguard stuff is blue which would go better with my Patriot Blue truck! :)

Pink is good

I've heard that it is a natural relaxer. Something to do with the color spectrum and the effect it has on the psyche. Jeez, did I just say that in the Engine/Drivetrain forum :D  There is actually a guy in Texas that can tell you how to get pink eyeglasses. He is a religious scholar, specializing in the study of the antedeluvian world. To keep it simple, he hypothesized that the reflective/filtering properties of the firmament caused a pink glow, which is significantly better for people; mentally and physically, which means your Cummins will be more laid back, as well as efficient and cool :D Give em that for an explanation of the pink stuff and see how fast the subject gets changed  ;) :p

PINK RULES!!! LONG LIVE THE PINK STUFF(50K or more at least)
