This is probably one of the reasons the cheaper filters (Fram) filtering media won't stay together. The engineer at Mag-Filter told me this is volume they measured when they were designing their new B Series filter magnet.



In contrast, a high volume oil pump for a Chrysler 440ci or Street HEMI® flows at about 6 GPM.

That is amazing, to put this in terms I can understand, when I designed my sprinkler system for my yard, I had a static pressure of 75 psig and a dynamic flow rate of 18 GPM through a 1 inch pipe. That tells me thats a hell of a lot of oil flowing. If we spring a leak all the oil would be gone in about 12 seconds!!
 
How big is the oil pickup tube in the pan?

I can't believe it's any bigger than half an inch. There's no way with 50psi you could move that much oil.

However, I could be talkin' out my a$$!

I grabed my '95 Cummins Engine catalog after I read your post. I was skeptical too. They don't give an I. D for the pickup tube, although it looks huge in the drawing. Possibly 3/4"?



I looked at the "Lubricating oil pump" p/n 3936203.



Sure enough it says GPM: 20. 5 @ 4200 Rpms :)



Not sure why this give 4200rpm. A stock engine will rev nowhere near that high. :)

Remember, it has to pump a lot more for oil cooled pistons! The old NTC's used a double suction pump if they had the piston nozzles. Craig
 
Oil filter should very tighten about 1 full turn, cuz once happen

my sister stop here for visiting. And I thought my very very big nosy, when my sister is in house, shh just open her Dodge Ram 98 diesel truck hood and check oil dip and find that it was way low. Nothing left on oildip stick. Looking for what cause, and finding

out the oil filter is very losely. Oil leaking from filter. If she drive other 10 miles, her truck would be toast. Boy if I didn't so so nosy she would be trouble, no warranty, all at her expense. So I told her about this

and was surprised so tell me to change oil, I put new oil filter and it is 1 full turn not 3/4 turn as by direction. She think oil filter installed was her son

not tighten enough, and diesel engine shaking make it loosing oil filter.

She say oil warning light didn't come on. So I went look how losely is her oil filter,

just about 1/8 turn to take off.

When I change oil and drain her truck, saw about 1 litre of oil left.

Oh she is lucky.
 
The filters on the older NTC Cummins used in tractor trailor applications were located behind the front wheel, drivers side. The engine held 8 gallons of lube oil. One day while bobtailing to the shop, I was preparing to make a right turn, glanced at the tach, glimpsed the oil pressure gauge dropping to zero :eek: coasted around the corner in neutral while shutting her down. One of the oil filter cannisters had ruptured at the end cap weld and in about 40 feet of road the engine had pumped all of the oil out that the pan pickup could reach. Without the filter restriction, the pump just free flowed the oil out of a three inch opening in a matter of seconds. There was no engine damage but I realized how fast that pump moved oil with the engine running about 1800 rpms.
