One of my snowplowing subcontractors called me yesterday to ask me what I thought of a 2000 F**d diesel.

He currently owns a '92 W350 CTD, and would keep that truck, but wants to move to a newer truck as he feels his truck chassis is getting tired. Note: The engine and transmission have been rebuilt, so drive train is in solid shape.

Cutting to the chase, what do you guys know of this make and model year of truck. This is a standard cab, one ton. Question in general, what are the known problems with the 7. 3 PS, this particular year. transmission issues?

I tried to steer him another direction, and he hasn't committed to anything - - yet.

Need some legitimate ammo to keep him "in the family" as it were.

Not many miles put on his plow truck as he drives a company pickup for full time job.

Thanks for the input.

I'm not as biased as a lot of people here so I feel I can give you an honest answer. My 2001 F250 has 61,000 miles on it now. The only repairs I've had to do were a new steering box and rebuild the high pressure oil pump. The steering box was not under warranty, the oil pump was. The transmission has never been a problem, but I don't pull much with it. With 61,000 miles I'm on my second set of tires and the truck still has the original brakes and they have lots of life left.

The bottom line, I feel like the Cummins is a superior motor, but the Powerstroke isn't as bad as some make it out to be. I have no regrets for buying it, but I do want to go back to Dodge.

EXACTLY!! The PSD is a good engine, and the truck is solid. The truck is every bit as solid mechanically as the Dodge. The interior is not very nice IMO, but some folks like it. At least Ford listens to the customer and makes a REAL crew cab... ...

There are two types of people on here that knock the Fords, the ignorant and the ones that owned a lemon. Going from a first gen to a 2000 anything he will be disappointed in the long term durability of the truck, especially the steering.

Thanks for your input, guys. The deal didn't fly. He could get the truck at his price, but dealer said no drivetrain warranty offered for snowplowing operations. We're going to continue looking for a second gen truck around 60k mileage in the 18k to 20k price range.

The sub is very attached to his 1st gen truck, so that is not going anywhere. He gets attached to trucks that are paid for.
