What does that mean? I've run many trucks well over 100,000 miles and NEVER blew a head gasket! I don't understand... .....

Yessir, officer- that's my Vega (he said, trolling for sympathy). :D

Yeah, and that head gasket thing is the primary reason why GM puts Bars Leaks into all their engines as part of the factory fill of coolant. They still can't get anything to seal right.

Chris, do you have any references to back you up on that? I sincerely hope not, as I've laughed at Bars Leaks ever since I worked at Target in high school. The solids in the bottom of their glass jars always cracked me up - I always said that anyone that put that into their car/truck was an idiot! I've owned a number of GM cars and trucks over the year and have never put that garbage into my vehicles and haven't had any excessive leak problems (no more than any other manufacturer anyways). I would hate to think that the company that many of my family members work for puts that garbage into the system off the line!! PLEASE let me know if you have any proof of that - I will run it up the flag pole if so!

New Hemi

Looking at the specs on the new 2003 hemi, it says it will have "aluminum heads" (check out post on other forum). Looks like our own Mopar family has gone and done the same as we are trashing the others for. Oh the shame. Unless they finally get this one right some how.

The 5. 7 will make 330HP and 360LBS. and is supposed to be a rocket. It will be offered first in the 2500 and 3500 as a base engine. Then offered in the 1500 after that. But, I wouldn't have it in anything but a 1500 myself.

Hope they get it right, or we'll be getting flamed on the other sites for making the same mistakes.

I noticed it on a family member's Cadillac Northstar engine. It had a warning that when servicing the cooling system, if changing coolant to add a GM part # as a mandatory item. I origninally figured it to be like the Powerstrokes and DCA. Upon going to the dealer to get the part, the guy at the counter told me what it was, then said that it is used in ALL their engines. Upon arriving at home to dump it in, sure enough, the brown mess that could not be mistaken for anything else. It was definitely Bar's Leaks. Out the door went my confidence in General Motors as if it wasn't out the door enough already.

You want to know what the funny thing is about loyal GM guys? It doesn't matter, they'll still buy another one, even from a company that sells vehicles that come from the factory supplied with free bars leak. Loyal GM guys run out in the late 70's buys the infamous 350 conversion diesel-huge POS. Then when the 6. 2l comes out he tells eveyone, "Now this is gonna be the one!" Yet another disappointment. GM comes out with the 6. 5 turdo (not a mispelling) diesel, "Now THIS TIME this is going to be the one!" It's a bigger POS than the 6. 2. Now the D-max comes out, guess what the loyal GM guys are saying.....

dan

Actual quote from a gm guy to me when asked how he liked his 6. 5l turdo diesel, "Oh man, it's been a GREAT truck. It's got a 150 thousand miles and I've had no problem with it. Now, I have had it throw a rod in 3 motors but OTHER THAN THAT it's been a GREAT truck!"

Yes, I too was left wondering what it would take to count as a smoking pile of dog crap but who am I to judge...

Does anyone know if the Duramax 7800 has cast iron heads?

Does it seem ironic how they chose an I-6 configuration for their larger engine; I assume that engine is intended to be a “work” engine in medium duty trucks???

I may be wrong, but I wholeheartedly believe that the ONLY reason Ford and GM went with V8 diesels were for purely marketing reasons, and nothing else. When the drooling masses out there think of engines that make power, they think "big V8" because they don't know any better.

Mike

A friends wife is a financial officer at a large GM dealership. I was talking to my friend about this subject as they were going to be at the companies xmas party. He was going to ask one of the mech's what he was seeing but the mech was not there. The wife said that the dealer is selling every Dmax that comes in. They can't get enough.

My thoughts exactly.

Probably couldn't get enough bolt holes to hold down a straight six aluminum head without hitting a port anyways.

I have to wonder what's going on when I see a couple of used Dura-maxes per week in my local small town classified ads. In these parts folks mainly use their trucks for hauling cows and hay, guess DMs don't work well when they have to work.

How many valves in a Dmax anyway? Mmmmmm, theres your problem.

I think the power and durability of a diesel engine must be inversely proportional to the number of valves. :D :D

Yea, thats it!!

CHRIS i will back you up on the bars leak stuff... ..... most gm and i have also heard all other cars come with stop leak outta the factory... ..... though i can prove some gm cars only

this isnt a knock on gm just a fact

B... ... ...

A local used car dealer has a 1 ton dually crew cab Duramax sitting on his lot. It's a used car only dealer, too.

I guess I'll keep watch to see how long it sits there.

I can tell you this... the Chevy dealer all but admitted that a used Dodge with a Cummins sells several times faster and easier than a new duramax. He's got Duramaxes in stock regularly, but the only Dodge that didn't sell immediately appeared to have been a rebuilder that was patched together... a 94 2500 with a flatbed.
