but, that engine there looks like the block is aluminum from the satin machined finish.



do those new vt365 psd's use the powered metal rods like the later [00+] 7. 3 psd engines used?
 
That's called the Fairbanks Morse Opposed Piston engine. Two pistons in each cylinder that move opposite each other. I guess they are quite successful and still made.

Interesting that the rod for the PSD is so much wimpier than the one for the Duramax, despite having a longer stroke. I can almost see that thing bending and flexing with every compression stroke--kind of like when you hit a nail with a hammer and it flexes before returning to form.

Wow, this is an old post come back from the dead! I still love that connecting rod pic. I keep one posted up at my desk at work, and one in the truck. Anytime anyone asks why I bought the Cummins, I just show 'em the picture!:D That usually results in :eek: followed by Oo. followed by :cool:



But the women I work with all go :rolleyes:
 
This reminds me of a time I was looking around on the Powerstroke forum and those guys were defending the "powdered metal" rod. I never registered or posted, but one member actually had those guys believing that this was a "forged" rod and was stronger!



Powdered metal is far from a forging!
 
So, who is going to post a picture of the broken journal rods that are being used now? I have see photos of the ones used by Cat, but would still like to see the Cummins version.
 
Hers's a little bity 12 cylinder... the same engine that has the crank shown above.

I really would like to see a photo side by side crankshaft of the the Cummins, powerlesstroke, and duramax.

With rods and without.
