First Time Post. Maybe I looking in the wrong areas but I have not seen any posts/threads on new fits/Mods. for CTD in the North Country. Canada North into the Territories. I am fully aware of the down side of owning a diesel when it's -40 Deg. However has there been any new changes.

Thanks

STomson, welcome to TDR! There are a few members around here that live in the far north that can give you some tips. Turbo Horseman lives in Hay River but not sure if he gets on here much.

Three things I would do:

1) Run Esso XD3 0w-40 grade 4 synthetic in the winter. It'll flow good in the extreme cold.

2) Install an exhaust brake. This greatly helps warmup because you can engage it and it gives the engine something to work against to generate heat.

3) Maybe install an Espar heater which runs off diesel fuel and heats your coolant when the engine isn't running and can be programmed to come on independently and have your truck warming up before it's time to fire up and go.

Your signature says that you have two block heaters... . that's what I did with mine. The factory block heater is only 600 watt and isn't really enough in my opinion. As a result of, I added a 250 watt heater on the oil pan to help keep the engine warmer when its plugged in. I haven't used this combo together yet (I put the oil pan heater on this spring) but I think it will work well. 850 watts is better than 600 watts and its still well within a 15 amp breaker's limits.

As far as oil, I just run Valvoline 5W-40 synthetic all year round. We have seen temps dip to -40F here for the past two winters and the pickup has been just fine. I park in a heated shop at night, and I'll plug it in at work if its colder than 10 above.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. I will give them a fit and see how it goes this winter. I don't know if I am just getting older or it's just plain getting colder each year.

Do the ESPAR, it is a great little unit and very nice when its -30 out.

I would also second the transmission pan heater, it works real well on all our work trucks in Prudhoe Bay.
