Not on my truck. I might try it if I had another Diesel truck laying around that I didnt care what happened to the engine. It sounds expensive and potentially compicated to get to work. Too many things to go wrong. We have enough to deal with with the bad pumps already on out trucks(24 valvers).

About the only thing I might want to try in the near future is the toilet paper oil filter canister that is out.

I will be moving into a new house next week and my commute will double because of it. I have been toying with the idea of buying a vw diesel truck to use as a commuter vehicle. 40 to 45 mpg would be nice, and if 3/4 of that milage could be on free or next to free oil I could save quite a bit on fuel and wear and tear on the Cummins. Just a thought. Most of the time my bright ideas get me in trouble. I'll try and keep the damages to a minimum this time

There was a short feature on Iowa Public TV a few weeks ago about someone who does this with an older VW Rabbit. Outside of the hassle filtering, I don't think it is a bad idea. Another thought might be to put a temp gauge on the oil tank, so you could be certain it was adequately warmed up before switching to it. This is the first commercial version I've seen. Ray

By looking at the pictures on that link it seems to me you could build your own greasel for $50 and one trip to the hardware store.

Your right. If I decide to do this I won't be buying their kit. I'll build it myself, more my style! I'm eyeballing a 1982 vw pickup for $1000 right now. The tank and the diagram don't show how they circulate the coolent in the tank. I suppose coiled copper would be best. Man, I'm startin to get excited about this! Great. Another friggin project. I'm a glutton for punnishment

Hey, Maybe the switch to turn on the greese could be hooked up to a temp switch so when you switch fuel it doesn't switch until the greese is up to temp!

My luck I'd forget to switch back to diesel ahead of time some cold winter day. I'd need an idiot proof shutdown timer activated when I switched back to diesel.

I agree, if the rest of this idea works as advertised, the biggest thing to bomb to make it user-friendly would be to have the solenoid valve dependant on the oil temp AND rpm... . or vehicle speed... . I know my wife would forget to switch something before shutting down... . I probably would too at some point! Both of my ideas have holes in them... . maybe someone else can come up with a better trigger for "almost there"

I've been adding strained, used, Peanut oil off & on since Dec. Not more than about a gallon per tank ful, & I think it acturally runs better when I'm using it. It's diluted with the diesel fuel enough it hasn't gelled yet with temps a little above zero at times, but I'm using regular fuel additives also. I had a bunch of the used oil to get rid of, so I just started putting it in the tank at fill ups, a little bit at a time. Cheaper than buying the kit. I poured it through cheese cloth, and every other fillup, open the drain a little on the fuel filter to drain out anything that might have settled to the bottom of the housing. I'm out of warranty at 153k, but it's been doing fine.

Ray, I saw that too. I thought it was interesting how his filter setup for pumping the oil into the car used his old oil filters from the motor, was even recycling his motor oil.

He was talking about driving cross-country on veggie oil, hope he has success.

He used the setup in the winter too, just mixes it with alcohol. The word alcohol made me cringe, NOT IN MY TRUCK!

I'm going to pick up a Rabbit and maybe play with the idea.

Engine temps?!?!?!

The first time I heard about this was from a guy filling up his VW next to me. It sounded great right up to the point where he asked me if I had a Cummins because it burns too hot and burns out the rings in the Cummins.

That ended my research.

I'd need an idot proof shut down timer...

Just remember: As soon as you make something idot proof, they'll make a better idot.

Cool idea but... ... ... ... . not on my truck. If I had a vw diesel, I would jump on that. Besides, 12 gallons isn't going to get me far in my truck.

From what I've been reading used oil doesn't work great in direct injection diesels, although they are working on it. If a guy could pickup a diesel vw cheap it sure would be a fun project. And if it worked out well could be a real economical ride.

Ok. That's it. I gotta have one now. I've found one about 150 miles from me. "$2,000, 81 VW PICKUP Diesel, runs good, 40-45mpg. $2000 incls parts veh". I haven't seen it yet but being of Dutch decent I can't bring myself to spend that much . If the parts truck is ok and the driver runs out good what do you think it's worth?

I've seen them from 1000 to 3000. If it is really good shape then 2K is not too high. These things are getting scarce for nice ones.
