Road Constuction in Ohio

Well a couple of weeks ago I was one of about 29 money makers that got cut. If I had known that I would've been one of the unfortunates, I would've held back on jumping levels to make top pay! Word is that the company built another plant down in Mexico and since they shut down the Tennessee plant 6 months ago, they're shutting this one down in November. Maybe I'm lucky to get cut when I did and won't have to compete with the other 650 employees to find a job in November.

There may be a bright side to all of this. I have to go for a final interview Thursday or Friday at a Filtration company. I will be starting off at 33% more than I was making, but I will have to go to Germany for 8 weeks for training. I've never been out of the country before. Anyone been there?

I'd love to hear some optomistic things about Germany as I am not really excited about going and have recently watched Castaway and that didn't help.

Wish me luck.

I know a bunch of guys who just got back from serving in the US Army over there, they said it is great and they want to back. They said its really nice there and the people are friendly to Americans, not like in Okinawa

Wowzy... sorry to hear of your plight, but sometimes it turns out for the better! Good Luck from the NorthWest!

I heard on the radio tonight that the major unions are supporting the alien amnesty. Geez, can't hardly believe that. All of the jobs that we lose to other countries due to cheaper labor, and now the cheap labor is coming here.

Don't worry

WOWZY,

You will surely enjoy your time in Germany. The people over there are very friendly with Americans. Most of the Germans speak English too. The beer is worldclass... what elese do you need?

You will have FUN!:)

Marco

P. S. I've forgotten to mention. Another fun factor is that there is NO speed limit on German highways!;) ;) ;) ;)

That's a serious road trip. Have fun and enjoy the beer and brats. I've never been there, but some relatives have and they had nothing but good things to say about the place. Sorry to hear about the job, but it sounds like it will work out for the better. Good luck.

WOWZY

Good luck on the interview. Sometimes bad things happen for a good reason.

What are you going to due without a Cummins for 8 weeks, You may need to start somekind of patch program to help you with the withdrawal symptoms. LOL:D :D

My dad was in Germany (service in the Army), he always wanted to go back. Said it was beautiful.

Safe trip:cool:

I have been to Germany several times, both military and civilian. It is definitely one of my favorites. People, food and sights are all great. I hope you like potatoes. I can't hardly remember a full meal without them.

Phil

That sucks on the job loss... ... the good news is you already got another one lined up.

I can't comment on Germany cuz I never been there, but always liked German and learned it in highschool (also some relatives are full blooded Germans), so I know a lil bit about it.

You would think a kid in highschool in Texas would take Spanish... right? :D

Just wanted to say ... . Good Luck!

Geez! I never thought about leaving my Cummins for that long!

I guess that I'll just have to Huff some Unimog fumes twice a day!:D

The job is between myself and another guy that applied.

They wanted someone with 5 yrs experience in Electro-mechanical maintenance who is a supervisor but actively working on equipment for the last 5 yrs and who is experienced in Word and Excel. Talk about wanting your cake and eat it too!

I have to refresh my Word and Excel skills this week.

Thanks for the support!

My fiancee and I went to Munich in late May and had a BLAST! South Germany was really clean, most people were friendly, and the scenery is AWESOME. Just beware of the kuchens (desserts) and beers they are all good, and full of calories. :p

Be sure to venture out on the Autobahn and check out the sites. Lots of castles and churches and other neat stuff. It's pretty awe inspiring to be passed by a Porsche when you're doing 110 mph, and it feels like your standing still .

And finally, the best part, almost everyone overthere runs a diesel on the road, hardly any gassers. They're all pretty much small cars, but they can still get up on step pretty quick. The whole time I was there I was wondering how much fun it would be to clatter around on the 'Bahn in my big bada$$ Cummins Turbo Diesel. The looks , the respect :D, the ...

Good luck and enjoy!

Sorry about the job, good luck on the interview! I spent 2 and 1/2 years in Germany (before the wall came down) and I'd go back without a 2nd thought! Do you know where the training will be at? Like I said good luck with the job!

I don't know where the training will be. I probably won't be lucky enough to go right away.

I might take my Hot Edge and Harness with me and see if some local Cummins owner wants to see what power is all about. On second thought it might set off the alarms going through Airport security. Can you imagine the reactions if Airport Security asks me what it is and I reply, "It's just a mild BOMB":D

Wowzy,

Good luck on the job interview - as everybody said you will enjoy Germany. You won't see too many pick-ups and you'll be surprised at how much less space Europeans require. My in-laws apt is about the size of my 5th wheel:) You won't see too many pick-ups over there - just too darn big. My wife is from the Bonn/Koln area - let me know if that's where you'll be and I can have her suggest some places too visit/things to do.

Brian

I was there many years ago when i was in the AirForce and i enjoyed the visit, I think you will like it. Have fun. :D

Good luck WOWZY - Hope you get the new job and have lot's of fun in Germany. I'm sure you'll be richer from the experience.

Doc

Why does this happen now?!!

Today I get 2 phone calls on job offers. One I had to turn down because of commute to work distance was 40 miles. The second one I'm gonna consider till I get a call from the Big One. Any other time no one would've called.

It's 3rd shift but I gotta do something as the wife and kids are driving me nuts!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Big One to call.

Thanks again for the support

I've noticed things usually seem to work out for the better. I've had some stuff happen to me that, at the time, seemed like the end of the world and in the end it was the best thing that could have happened. Ya just have to have a little patience. I hope you get to do the Germany thing, I spent two years over there in the Air Force and had a wonderful time. Make sure you make time to sight see. Oh, and the wine is the best. Good Luck!

I will probably indulge in the Dark High octaine beer myself.

I had given some thought that in the event that this job doesn't pan out, that maybe I might contract myself and my truck out to one of those Trailer building companies and deliver Horse trailers and such around the Southeast. What's the going rate per mile that one should exspect to get?

Wowzy, good luck with whatever you find. My only advice is to never take a job that you wouldn't do for free. Work is a major part of life, if you aren't enjoying what you do you are wasting your time. -Bill
