Rollover Vent

Is this rollover vent hose a short 7-9 inch piece that comes out of the recess on the top of the tank and hangs over the side? If so, then my 05 has it, if not, then oh crap--I need to fix this.

I believe you are correct... and my 04. 5 doesn't have them either... this week's project...

Bad lift pumps, exposed rollover valves, ineffective filtration. DC has surely managed to mess up the fuel delivery systems on these trucks. I think the ULSD rollout has magnified these problem by dislodging all sorts of crud into the fuel delivery chain that normally would not have been there.

The result is that each owner has to decide which route to take. Either keep the truck stock, hope for the best, and then warranty any fuel system problems. Or, fix these factory defects yourself to prevent future problems, thus voiding your factory warranty on at least the fuel system.

I chose the latter, and fixed all three problem areas at my own expense. I plan to keep this truck long after the factory warranty would have expired anyway, so voiding it now didn't really bother me. So far no injector or CP3 problems with 32k on the clock.

The other issue..... ADDITIVES! We need to be proactive with providing adequate lubrication for our fuel systems. Don't trust the refiners to do it for you. Use some sort of additive with every tankful, and there are lots of good ones out there. Personally, I use a custom mix of Primrose PowerMaster, Marvel Mystery Oil, plus some Power Service in the winter.

What a mess.

You guys putting extended hoses, put a little fuel filter on the end too. A small push-on filter for an old carburated car works well (I think mine is from an old VW beetle).

I'm still here - here is the latest

Thanks for the idea about the insurance company helping me. I will check into that. Hopefully I will find a few other claims that the insurance company has paid and maybe we can get Dodge to take action.

As for now -

I received a call from Chrysler Financial's "pre - legal " department today. He was very cordial with me and actually left his direct number on the message. I called (I figured I better since I am hiding the truck and he might be telling me of their next move). He claimed he was calling to find out whether I was going to give up the truck or if they would have to take legal action in the form of a lawsuit. I told him the same thing I have been telling the other callers - no I will not give up the truck because I think it is evidence to be used in a law suit and if they really wanted me to cooperate, then they would cooperate with me by contacting DC and asking them to help me, so that we could try to resolve this and all move on in life. He said the I should continue to consult with my attorney and determine whether I should give the truck back or not.

That is what I did, I may have found an attorney who will help me. I will know more next week.

Chevy still doing fine. I hope it is one of those with no problems 34k miles and counting.

Referencing DPKetchum -

I agree!

I think the metal in my fuel system came from the lift pump, however, someone mentioned that the return line might send some from the CP3 back into the system. Can this happen? Either way - it ain't right!

Regarding the vent hose - just imagine how many tractors would be sold if their fuel systems couldn't handle a little dirt. The vent hose is just another indication that DC see this fuel system as a problem. I wonder: are the DC engineers this blind or stupid to the real problem - or do they (DC) just NOT want to redesign the injectors because of a possible recall or the cost related to an "admission of fault". To be honest, I hope it is the latter - I really don't want to think that the engineers are that bad. Of coarse, a corporation hiding fault doesn't say a lot for morals. I better get off my soap box on that issue.

How did you get Bosch to admit to a micron rating? And yes I wish I had the conversation that I had with the DC rep recorded as well. Actually, I tried recording a conversation on my cell phone by holding a cassette recorder to the ear peice - all it recorded was a terreble buzzing sound - maybe the cell phones are emitting some kind of harmful stuff toward our brains?!? A few years ago, I tried to find a cell phone recording device. Everything I bought did not work. If anyone knows of such a device, please let me know.

Hey TDR

Have you thought of making a Chevy forum?

It wouldn't even have to be a different web site - maybe just a button to take us to a page on this sight!

Just think - "More Customers"

Then maybe you could make a seperate link to a "debate" forum - a forum where the different enthusiast could debate, argue, and in general show their intellengence(or stupidity) and the only time we would see it is if we chose to go there.

You do such a good job on this site and Geno's! (I have yet to find Covercraft seat cover for my Chevy)

PS. If you look at all of my previous post, you will see some discussion about the rear end temps and Mag Hystec covers and the paint peeling off my Dodge rear ends(before using Mag Hytec - an excellent product). Guess what - the paint has peeled off my Chevy's rear end - I understand American Axle is part of Chevy, but I thought the design on was a little different.

I wanted to know what Bosch said was the recomended micron rating for THEIR HPCR. I started with a web search. Nothing in print. Called several Bosch phone numbers and no one knew. Then e/mailed Bosch and while waiting for a reply tried another phone number whom said R&D engineers know, call them. I also NEVER mentioned any thing about Dodge. I told them all I was doing a install project for a customer. A boat owner and it was getting TWO off shore diesels with Bosch HPCR systems. Then the call from R&D late the next day with the all OUR systems require 5 microns/absolute do you understand. I said yes and thank you. Bosch coroporate flat out refused to give it out! Some BIG secrete!I bet because of Dodge and G. M. trucks. Many moons ago I read a post about dealer finding metal in the fuel tank of a downed Dodge truck on a forum. I want to say a post from Canada. Filings like is what was posted. They said it had to be from the fuel that was purchased. Even then I thought HUMMM. What IF something in the trucks fuel system seems more like it for some reason. BACK when NISSAN had to do a recall on injectors on 300Z series autos. EVERYONE ONE of them. (fuel leaks/fires)The manufacture(vendor subed to make them) of said injectors went belly up as the recall hit so I was told. NISSAN had to take care of the recall on their own. Was told it ALMOST put them under and out of the U. S. auto market it was so costly. Started with mid 80s model year through like early 90s autos.

I am sure bosch would not want to lose DC as a customer, so it would make sense that they don't want to talk about system problems. However, they should realize that they too will get a bad reputation. The VP44, IMO has already done that because of its short life compared to some of the mechanical pumps.

Through my experience, I have been convinced that the more you filter any fluid the longer the system will last. In injection molding I proved this over and over in hydraulic systems, heat transfer fluid systems, and water systems. Unfortunately, I don't have the money, at this time, to install a aftermarket filter system on truck. It is unfortunate that consumers should even have to worry about such after we pay $30k to $50k for a vehicle. I know that the mfr would say that they don't want to install expensive items on new trucks becasue in their mind (and I am sure they have marketing studies to show) it would make them less competitive in their final price. So now we, as consumers are buying trucks like we vote for our president - we don't really want any of them, so we vote for the one that will give us the least problems. Trucks barely make the warranty before they need to be replaced and the presidents seem to barely make four years. Seems to be the American way. Of course, when GM is paying over $1000 per vehicle in retirement benifits to its former employees and the number of retired employees is growing, the profit needed to operate and satisfy the stock holders is increasing. I don't have all the answers,(or at least time I don't have time to post them (joke)) but it seems to me that some of the business practices don't make sense - like making a truck that's fuel filter system does not protect its components. I firmly believe that all 06's will see a fuel problem before 150k unless the owner takes precautions to catch the contamination that come in fuels. I think that many of the 06 owners may not realize they even have the problem at first because it usually starts with a slight vibration during idle. It would not surprise me to see a class action suit come from this as DC denies more warranty claims as these trucks get more and more miles on them.

Dang, I need to throw my soap box away.

what is the difference between the 2006 models and the 2005 models as far as the fuel system? i was initially under the impression they were the same. it seems you hear more about fuel problems with the 2006 models than you do with the 2005's??

Mileage

Just curious. Which model Duramax did you get? How much better mileage do you get with it? What mileage do you get with it, towing? Solo? What did you get with the Dodge. When was your Dodge built?

somebody may have already said this, but I was under the impression that there was no warranty provided if your vehicle was used for commercial purposes.

Mr. Morris a few statements in your post really jumped out at me.

Although I hate to see anyone having trouble with their equipment not paying money you owe and then buying a new truck is bordering on being a theif.

You state you didn't drive the truck hard then talk of pulling 15 thousand pound trailers at 70mph and 6 mpg, no wonder your pinion seal leaked, a trailer that heavy and at that speed in 100 degree heat your differential temp would of been over 300 degrees.

And 88,000 mi in six months and you say you missed 10,000 dollars worth of wages? What were you going to run 125,000 mi. in six months?

I hope you get all of this worked out to your satisfaction but I think you will find yourself in the same predicament with the chevy if pushed in the same kind of service.

If going to pull those kind of loads at those kinda speeds and mileages you really need a class six or seven truck.

J. Todd, I have an 06 Cummins in my drive and I wouldn't be quivering in my brithches if I were you. I know i'm not. If I were going to drive over 100k a year hauling to make a living, I would certainly get a commercial truck suited for the type of use. Unless you plan on pulling max load all the time and making a living with your truck, I wouldn't sweat it. I know I am satisfied so far with my truck and am just enjoying it, not going to worry about what might happen. There are a lot better choices for a commercial truck that are heavier duty all the way around, and if that is what I was going to do for a living, I would research it and get one. I hate the bad luck some people have, and I may be one of them, but if it is mechanical, it can break. Especially if used to extreme.

"Metal in filter"? what does that mean? Was your fuel contaminated with metal?

Probably the LP was self destructing... I know that the "campaign pumps" shed a significant amount of metal flecks...
