are the 3rd generation automatic"s any better then the older ones. i have a 2001 club cab 4x4, 354 gears, auto. im tired of hearing what a poor transmission dodge puts behind such a great engine. i have a few mods done, 3-pillar gauges, edge pluse, hooked as a e-z. should i spend the 3-3. 5 grand and redo the transmission, or will the new one be much better? why does dodge neglect the transmission? im happy with my over all truck. wish it was a long bed. matt

The 48RE out soon, will be significantly stronger than the 47RE it replaces. See my earlier post for the upgrades.

It is not that the 47RE was bad, it has just been the weakest link in the drivetrain. Remember it is 30+ years old, and has been upgraded many times through the years for many different applications. If you follow the manufacturers recommendations, it will provide many years and miles of dependable service.

The problem begins when mods are made to the engine, or the vehicle is overloaded. That is why the dealers and DC get so hot about mods and warranty. Treat it the way it was designed and it will hold up. If by chance you have a problem, it is repaired under warranty. For real heavy duty use, get the manuals.

A friend of mine who works at the local Dodge dealer is the transmission tech. He says he works on far more 5 speeds than 47REs. The 5th gear goes out of the 5 speeds. I ordered the 48RE on my new '03 3500 HO and with proper maintenance (flushing, fluid changes) and using common sense while driving, I expect it to be just fine! Will the 48RE last 150k?? I hope and we'll see. I like the 7-70 warranty also. I had a '96 V-10 with a auto (46RE or 47RE?) and it pulled fine, no problems.
