Maybe ford will get smart and drop the 466 in their trucks???

These inline engines have been around awhile... and going by memory I believe the DT466 is way to tall and heavy for a light duty truck... that's a 7+ liter engine... which in a inline configuration (cylinders straight up and down instead of on an angle) is a tall and long engine. :)
 
The 466 has been around since the late 70's. The older indirect injection ones were darn fine powerplants. My experience has not been as good with the newer 466's. The 530 is junk completely and unequivocally, IMHO. We have two of them in fire truck applications. They are hard to start, run terrible when they are cold and not much better after they are warm. As mentioned, these are way too large for a pickup application.
 
Didn't they used to have a DT366?? I seem to remember some S-series mediums with that badge.



Now, their 9 liter V-8, THAT was a real runner... haha

Mayhaps so. I have never been much of an International guy. I limit my knowledge to their products that I have to deal with.
 
IH released the DT-414 and DT-436 engines in '72 and the DT-466 a few years later, they all use the same blocks but with different cranks and pistons. The older mechanicaly injected DT-466s were every bit as good as the CDC 5. 9 although they were prone to cavitation if not taken care of. I'm thinking the dry weight of a DT-466 is around 1,800 lbs and as much as I'd love to have one in a pickup (I would swap one for my Cummins in a heart beat) I don't think you could ever get one to fit. They did also build a DT-360 in medium duty trucks and a few farm tractors. When IH released the 400 series Melrose Park engines they were way ahead of their time, how many other engines in their class have been around for over 30 years and are still competitive?
 
Isn't it true that IH was a pioneer in common rail injection? They were also trying a camless engine, which I heard they gave up on. Saw for the first time in my shop a DT570, EGR. Dont know much about it, but it looks very different than the 466E and 530Es.
 
I think the IH 466 and 530 are a little less than 1800 lbs. I think thier electronic system is good, but the valve stem wear problems they had is a turnoff. Hopefully they cured that. Also never saw a water pump make it past 40,000 miles before it ate the front cover up when the bearing failed.
 
I'm with aseigworth. At work we have a IH 4700 dump with the DT466E and it is used in the winter to plow. The oil pan is rotting fast. There are large thick scales of rust coming off the pan. Funny b/c the same thing happened to our 97 PSD's oil pan. Maybe it's an IH thing? It is a good motor though. ;)

That's what FORD should be putting in their trucks not a 8 cylinder but something to give us a little challange.
 
dt 466 and ht 570 have the same block only different displacement, and some programming. dt 466 is not to bad of an engine, although personally I love the 570's. They go like crazy, I'd hate to see what they do to the ford drive line.

Yes, both of them smoke very badly on startup. Unfortunately, our dealer is awful. I will look into it this weekend; it would be nice if they ran better than they do now. Part of the issue is linked to the fact that the power output is lower than what we realistically need. That, though, can not be blamed on International.
