The problem is not enough of an air leak. Over time the rollover valve gets dirt and junk built up in it not allowing it to breath well anymore. A new one is $18 or so. I replaced them and all is well again.

Cooker; --- what is the rollover valve? Is this on the tank, pump, filter or where? I think you are referring to something on the tank but perhaps on newer trucks than my 94. 24 valve perhaps? Thanks

The rollover valve is on the top of the fuel tank that lets air in to vent the tank while the truck is up right but if the truck was upside down fuel would not be allowed to come out. The become dirty over time and are not able to pass enough air creating a vacuum in the tank.

Basically a one-way breather valve or check valve. Do you have a part number for that or a correct name for the part so the dealer parts guy could find one for me?

Thanks, Joe

The correct name of the part is rollover valve. If you need a PN just let me know I can probably dig one up.

If you hear a whooshing sound when you open your fuel cap then you have vacuum in the tank and a rollover valve could be the problem.

Thanks Cooker, I could definately use that part number if you have it handy. Those dealer parts guys are idiots and never know what your talking about without a part number.

I just filled up about an hour ago and as far as I know I could not feel or hear any whoosh as you described. I am currently hunting down an unusual noise right now in another thread and I am suspecting it could be tank vacuum related???

My 97 started ticking from the drivers side fender well at least that is were i can hear the tick loudest . . I just had a new lift pump put in around 3,000 miles ago could i have got a bad one? I think it was from cummins

So your new pump seemed to be still ticking after you had it installed?

Mine is still ticking after I installed the new one. Got good fuel pressure and power, so I guess I am just learning to live with it. Still comes and goes, but I sure do enjoy the smooth sounding engine when it is not ticking. :D

Jgheen- I was told that when you change lift pumps you should reuse the part that rides on the cam. If you didn't that would cause the ticking. I did not reuse this part and I have the ticking. Have you heard anything about this?

Cooker- Maybe I will try this valve that you speak of. Do you have the part # or is it in the thread that was posted earlier?

On edit- Cooker this valve is a Dodge part I am guessing. How hard is it to change? Do you have to drop the tank?

Travis, to be honest I have never heard of that in the little years I have been on here or been a Cummins owner. My old lift pump ticked pretty good and I doubt that would have eliminated the ticking. I believe the sound I am hearing is the fuel in the return line.

Cooker, I believe I do have vacuum in the tank, but sometimes I don't hear the whoosh you mentioned. I too could use the Dodge part number of that "roll-over" valve that was mentioned earlier in this thread. It would be worth a try to get rid of the return line noise I hear from time to time.

Thanks JGheen i guess i will live with it i was just worried the LP would get weak and trash the injection pump. I mite try a new case LP i heard they last longer !
