Transmission Pressure Test Gauge

Holy Horse Power Batman, or should I say Holy Smoke Batman, I only got about six blocks and stepped on the loud pedal and the truck almost ran out from under me, in a cloud of smoke. An officer going the other direction made a quick turn around so I had to change routes. Anyway all is OK, I now have to watch the pyro but even more the smoke. I have my Varable Valet almost in Valet mode and it still smoked too much, so I backed off the starwheel to the center of the opening and am going to back it off 2/3 of the way back. At 60MPH on the freeway I can shift down to second and floor it and still smoke out the Freeway.

I should have my new turbo by next weekend and that should help a lot. I will post again when I have had more time to run it some more. I was at 383 HP and can only say it is way above that now with just the pump and H. D. springs. Oo. :D :--)

LOL... ... Hard fueling is good! What is odd is making a run then looking back at the smoke left over. I had just a tad of idle stumble so tonight I added one click to the springs and it is smooth as silk throught the whole power band, I can't even make it stumble at any RPM no matter what I do! Love this pump!

Piers you have out done yourself on this one!

The one thing that is cool about our trucks is they're heavy and steer well so you can make the road corrections below 60 MPH:D

I got to run the truck out the So. Cal. freeway today, from a standstill or running at 70mph instant sit back in the seat response from just a tickel on the throttle. I am driving like I have a cracked egg on the throttle. :D I love it, I love it, Awsome I can't wait for May Madness dyno here I come. The only draw back I have found so far is that speeding tickets are going to be to easy 0-50 in nothing flat. Having too much fun for an over 60 dude.

Bruce:D :D

I keep backing down the pump and can still smoke out whole counties. EGTs go for the sky. I am thinking of twins using a HY35-9cm for fast spooling for street driving and towing and using the Pius H2E-14cm that I have for the large turbo. I don't need massive pressure I just want enough cool air at 45-50# to keep the smoke and EGTs down. I think the HY will spool fast and get the pressure up and the HE2 can take over at 15-20# and go from there. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Bruce I'm going to save you some money and give you some free info, my Twins are a stock 35/18. 5 and a PDR HT3B/26, I run at 65 psi and I can make 1900 degrees EGT with 370 injectors! You will not be able to back that pump off enough for a little set of Twins and the drive pressure on an HY-9 will go through the roof quick but yes it will be quick to spool, with my 16 housing on my Twins drive is 1 to 1 at 60 psi and at 70 boost, drive is 82..... going south at that point. Haven't checked it with the 18 yet as I just installed it Friday before going to the track, spool up is no issue for me even in valet and in valet with my adjustments at WOT is barely smokes a haze, That's about all I will say on line!

Jim

uh jim I thought the idea was to smoke like Dave all the way down the track, sheesh, thats my plan and I am almost there baby

I really could care less about the smoke but that is what it takes to keep the temps up, one thing for sure the crowd loves it! I can be on the return road at the track and the smoke is still drifting across the stands:p They all look at the Twins when the hoods up and the pump is were it's at!

Jim:

Thanks for the info I am on my way to May Madness tomorrow morning. I hope to meet a lot of the TDR people there and get some more info on twins.

I just returned fro May Madness and did the dyno thing at a max of 576 with lots of smoke, and smoked all the way to the lights on the strip, on one run I over spooled the turbo and went 300' side ways with all four dually's smoking and the exahust of course. My best ET was 14. 86 for a 8,000# truck with all terrain tires.

LMAO, I got close to the 330 cone once too!

Going to Vegas I got 17. 9 while testing and adjusting, while on the freeway at night so the smoke wasn't so easy for the officers to see. I was empty but still weigh almost 8,000#. I haven't filled up yet to check the return trip.

Wasn't that decided it was a spike? If it wasn't you should have taken the high hp 12v single turbo which was given to 572hp. And lots of smoke isn't quite the right word for it. Actually it smoked more on day #2 when you made less power and alot more smoke.

Mike told Joe that the reason it was not held any longer is he let off the throttle and that it should have been a legal run, Joe did not allow it because it did look like a spike and I agreed with him. Mike said I should use those numbers, I don't care one way or the other. As after the first run I added more fuel and had lower numbers. On day two I added more fuel and had even lower numbers, I went the wrong way. Before going to the track I lowered the fueling to less than the first run and it ran better. After the second run I again decressed the fueling and went sideways on the first run and ran a 14. 86 on the second run.

Today I called Piers and lowered the fueling some more but haven't ran the truck yet.

Our race pumps don't like allot of rack travel! On my old pump I moved the plate forward from were I had it and lost power as told by the time slips, I then moved it back to were I had it and it stayed there. Once PDR got the pump they put it on the stand and did a few minor tweaks to make it a little better but the plate stayed in the same place..... it was at 18mm rack travel, remember when Piers said 18 is better than 21.

The run that included the highest valid hp number had a 3-4 gear shift in it. There was a smooth curve before the shift, a big drop in hp (negative spike) at the shift, then a vertical upwards with a positive spike before settling down into the power curve for 4th gear (automatic trans). Neither the huge negative nor the positive spike can be counted. We took the highest point elsewhere which was just after the shift, 502 hp.

This procedure is standard and normally one does not even allow a shift during a run. We allowed them because of the volume of trucks so long as a hp number could be picked from a relatively smooth part of the curve.

Would anyone rather we subtract the negative spike number from the positive spike number :D Naah, I thought not. Several trucks had a shift and all were treated in the same manner. One competitor got up to 414 hp at the top of the powershift spike (manual trans I think it was), but 404 was the best run, and during the run with the powershift the max was around 395 hp. The owner said he had estimated hp at 650-680 using a G-Tech device.

Nothing negative is intended here. Most folks have very limited experience with dyno curves. I hope I have given an adequate explanation.

What will it take next year? This year 600 hp was very respectable but the 600-650 range was hardly noticed due to the competition at the upper end of the 600s.

Joe:

As I said I don't care I will use the 502 that fine with me I only expected 450-470 anyway. I just started BOMBING less than a year ago and was unaware of the signs of overfueling I know better now. the new pump was only in for 1 1/2 days before leaving for MM. this was only the second time i dynoed this truck. I will see you all next year and hopefully break 600 with the same set up. The numbers arn't as important to me as the enjoyment from working on it and the look on the ricer's faces.
