Head flow rating....

what voltage??

Today I had to go to one of our New York properties to help them out in their maintenance division. So while going over some key budget information for the upcomming fiscal season the fire alarm starts. So we hop into action and the MDP panel is screaming that water is flowing thru the main 8" siameese fire connect. So down to the parking garage we sprint. Open the doors and man what a sceene! Thousands of gallons   by the minute are filling the garage ... . FAST!!!! Hopping from stairwell to the kabota tractor we get to the main room and start the shutoff process. Once the building stack empties it is waaay to clear what had happened.

That 8" carrier had blown apart like nothing I have ever seen. When it went it created a 8 foot , 8 inch round missle that had shot out once the double wick 90* elbo exploded ramming it (Both elbo and 8 foot missle) into the concrete wall. Once lodged against the wall the water pressure had shoved the previous 20 feet of 8" black pipe back a good foot bending all the kindorf and threadded rod that supports it.

The ice plug was about mid way between the 90 and the long straight run. It split the pipe lengthwise which had given it it's chance to slide down the pipe with the water pressure behind it. Once it rammed the 90 it blew that apart giving it it's exit into the wall. The force that it took to split an 8" black pipe is just un believeable. Ice can do some wicked things to stuff.

What would happen if you somehow took a 2 foot by two foot cube made of 1" thick steel and were somehow able to fill that cube with water under say 80 lbs of street pressure with NO AIR in it. Take that cube and freeze it ... deeply like the ict grip we have been in (-2 ambient to about 11 day time for a week) would it go off like a bomb?

Wow water is more power full than poeple think  After all that water came out that parking garage must have looked like a big ice scateing rink :-laf

I saw a 24" main jump 1' during a sprinkler test at delta airline main service hanger. :--)

It broke several tie downs but luckly not the main itself.

All testing was canceled till it was fixed.

and that was schedule 80 pipe or 40 ??

no doubt about the force and flow... just remove a coulpe heads in a large freezer [20,000 sq ft] and see what a skating ring looks like BTDT. . better said and employee did that :D
